Engine Replacement

What do you all recommend. If you were going to replace the motor in a 96 4runner would you put a salvage motor in it, or go for one of those Japanese motors? Are their any ways to inspect a salvage motor? Advice? Please!

Well first off, what kind of motor do you have? 3.0L V-6 or 22RE 4 banger?

Either way, becareful what you find.

96 has neither, you either have the 3RZ-FE 2.7l 4 banger, or the 5VZ-FE V6

That's right, I didn't even pay attention to the year.

Anyways, look around in junk yards for the engine that you have. Make sure you do a compression test, look for damage, etc.

How do you do a compression test on a motor that is not in an engine? What other tests should I do?
