Engine bay lighting

The other night I got stuck and when getting pulled out my rear back up lamp that I mount at the bumper line got busted. The drivers side one is still in tact and im thinking about using it as an under hood light source. Anyone done this yet? The best part of the backup lamp getting busted is I went out and got brand new brighter ones.

I haven't done it but I have been seriously thinking about it!

Let me know if you find any information on it!

light

build a little magnetic mount, wire it to a 2-prong plug with an adapter to go to the battery, 4ft of cord, you've got something close to what chevy did in their trucks in the ninties.

Oh man...a Jeep part on a Yota???? Hmm...lol...my dad has a light on his Chevy that I've been lookin' at for a while to get some ideas on how to mod it to fit my 4Runner. Not sure its gonna be that easy though...we'll see.

Yeah it's heresy I know, but when I had my jeep the only thing I never replaced was the engine compartment light bulb. The thing still worked on a 1987 Grand Wag. It outlasted the wp, mc, brake booster, power steering pump, alt, radiator, bat, carb, cc, headlights, engine and the d@mn TC.

Whoops almost forgot flywheel, too.

I have a few ideas on how I will do this. I am surprised more techies haven't done this mod. I am going to go with my one remaining driving light as my lighting source. The only Heep parts that will be attached to my Toy will be attached by the tow rope I use to pull them out.

I just put one of those exact units on my rig. I love it. I had to pull it apart, re-grease it on the inside and clean the electrical contacts, but for the $10 I paid, it's awesome.

I have that in mine! The best part is, it has a built-in mecury switch and automatically turns off/on when you lower/raise the hood! You don't need a pin switch!

Using the retractable cord lets you put the light/magnet anywhere you need it.

More pics and a install write-up on my 4Runner site.

WOW...a Yota/Heep Hybrid! Looks like a pretty light though, I like that auto on/off feature though! I may have to think about that!

BTW: BigBadBlue-Nice work on the remark about tow ropes and Jeeps!

I got mine from a old celica/supra at the junkyard for free. I used the metal mount that came with it and wired it off the battery with a in-line fuse and routed it through a toggle-switch. Its great. The light has a long cord on it so that you can use it anywhere in the engine bay.

Just a cheap/easy mod.

A buddy of mine found one at Walmart for $4.99 that is magnetic and has a retractable cord that plugs into the cigarette liter. Pretty good fix for a cheap price.

Just my .02

It is removeable so it can be used inside the vehicle and out. He keeps it in the glove box and uses it when he has to check something in the dark under the hood. It does great on his 1976 BMW 2002. I am going to get one for my 73 FJ40.

I pack two of these in my truck:

They have a magnetic base so I stick them in the bed when I'm moving stuff/packing at night.
I use them for the original intended use with a tent when camping. I've used it under the hood too.

Very handy!

Target $10 bucks a piece - in the camping section.

If you check out http://www.coleman.com I think they sell it online too.

Actually, found it - here you go:

I think this is the smartest way. Not having to deal with a pinswitch is darn cool.
