Electrical Advice?

After hooking up my 240 Blitz lights my interior lights as well as all the exterior lights dim pretty badly. When I accelerate everything will brighten up. I have a 96 ltd with 2 lightforce, plan on adding a warn 8000, and I have about 1500 watts worth of audio gear. Can someone recommend a good electrical upgrade that would solve my problems? TIA

yeah, you are def overloading the alternator with that much load, as is evidenced by the lights brightening when you accelerate. Capacitors, optima, probably both would be beneficial. Im sure an electronics guru will chime in with more detailed suggestions...

Why would he need a compacitor? All it does is store the voltage not supply it. I can see him using one if he had a system in the truck for the low hits. You might be better off doing a search on it since it's been covered a bunch before. As far as alternators, the 3rd Gens usually talk about putting an MR2 alternator on since it has more amperage and bolts right up as far as i know of. I'm contemplating one myself for mine. Or just recently there is a thread about a dual battery setup. Check in there or search dual battery.

Agree with IronMike, you need more supply not more storage. More battery only prolongs the issue. Upgrade the alt or turn off some stuff!

http://catalog.drivewire.com/drivewi...art=Alternator

is this the one...it only says 100amps and I thought I read somewhere on this forum that the MR2 had a 170amps *

"Get an alternator from a 91+ MR2 the one with the electrohydrolic power steering. Make sure you specify tha you MUST have the one for the power steering model.

Those beasts are 170AMS!!!

It bolts up (to the 5VZ) but you may have to change the pully though. Im running the MR2 crank pully too so im not sure if the mr2 alternator pully would line up.

Go to autozone and order a remanufactured one. Even if you dont trade your old one in for the core you will still save at least $200

Cheers

Jim"

Anyway, if it is a 100amps will that make a large difference over the stock alt I currently have?

Yeah I was wondering that myself Noel. I am really not sure about what the true amperage is though. The only other problem I can see with the MR2 alt. is the connectors. I have not really researched it much yet so I don't know. Yes it will make much more differnce over stock since I think ours is only like 60 amps max amperage.
