OK, so tell me if this is a stupid idea. I know there is a lot of debate that switching to syn oil is a bad idea on an old engine (and I know some people believe it's fine). But would I be alright to use a syn/dyno blend for the next couple changes, then after a while go pure syn? Let me know if this is an ok idea or if i'm retarted. Thanks for the info. :pat:

Listen to what Jim said. And also take a little advice from someone who switched to synthetic at 96,000...and now has 208,000. Go ahead and do it. I got 1 mpg better.

 

On an older engine with lots of mileage - would the change to synthetics be good right when the oil seals are replaced? Or should there be some wait time?

i say "it depends". if you let that engine go to hell, not change the oil frequently, poorly maintained, id say 'dont do it'. that way, if something bad happens to your engine because if its poor shape and things fail because of it, you wont be one of those people who bash synthetics later

seriously, i have never known anyone personally that has had a problem switching from dino to syn on a high mileage vehicle.

The synthetic blends are a nice, underappreciated oil. You'll be fine.

Do be aware of your engine leaks. If you've got a slobbery engine, switching to synthetics will be expensive and messy.

 

If you have any leaks or seepage, or just want to clean out your engine, you might read the Auto RX threads and then decide for yourself. I'm about 400 miles into a treatment right now.

 

I have, but they were on the 4.0L Jeep engines (which leak oil anyways)


Try syn-blend and see if it starts to leak. If it is ok, then try syn and see if that leaks.

 

I've been considering this change. I have a 98 4Runner 3.4L with 87,000 miles. I change the oil on schedule, and there are no apparent oil leaks. There just hasen't been enough convincing evidence to make me switch. I also wanted to switch my gear oil to synthetic as well, but I don't want any adverse effects. My car runs fine and I don't want to jepordize that. More good feedback about synthetics might push me to switch.

 

Pfft, 87,000 miles is still a new engine (for a Toyota). You should be fine!

 

Don't worry...Dino is good. And a Toyota on dino is gonna last a long time anyway.

But...

My '89 Corolla (with 256,000 miles) used to be my wife's car. Every now and then, I do an oil change with good dino oil run it for week...or two...or whatever, just to rinse some of the gunk out of the engine. I HATE Gunk's engine rinse (looks like kerosene). The first time I did one of these short changes, two or three days into the week, my wife comes home and says:
"I don't know what you did to my Corolla but I want you to put it back. It can't get out of it's own way."

She doesn't know what I do to the cars to maintain them. But she was right...On dino, the cars run good. On synthetic, they sing.
