Took off my rear brake drums, and drivers side shoe are not contacting drum at all. How do I correctly adjust them out?

 

Sorry, 2002 Tacoma 3.4l 4wd

 

rotate the adjusting wheel, until its slightly difficult to put the drum on.

 

The adjusting wheel is accessed from the back side of the hub, through the little slot plugged with rubber. Use a flat screwdriver and turn it until the brakes are just grabbing the drum.

 

Thanks, I think I have them adjusted good now. I don't think the drivers side had been contacting the drum for some time now.

 

Now I just need to swap the front to the 231mm tundras because they are almost ready to be replaced.

 

Does your taco have rear self adj. brakes?
If so your probably going to have the same problem down the road.
Star wheel could be gumed up causing it not to adjust when pulling on e-brake.
Just my two cents worth.

 

It actually wasn't too bad, but I cleaned it up more and I need to do the self adjust with ebrake some more today.

 

When I had a similar experience, I over-adjusted the shoes a bit. On my first drive down the road, the drums got real hot. I could smell them when I got out of the truck.

So, check them for heat occasionally (simply by touching the wheels) , to make sure the shoes aren't too close to the drums.

 

If your shoes are not adjusted enough it will take forever trying to get them correct with the emergency brake.
