From the drawing I saw it looks like just any other gear drive, open the fill/breather at the top then open the drain at the bottom. Close the drain the refill. Am I way off or is that all there is to the process on a yota?

Thanks. It looked just as simple as the gear drives we have at work but honestly I couldnt believe something on a vehicle was designed that simple, its usually the other way around.

you'll need a hand pump, preferably the kind that can screw onto the top of the bottle.

Not the breather, there is a dedicated plug for filling on the back of the diff. If you fill to the breather it'll be way too high.

 

Got is guys, thanks. Bob the writeup is great. I was calling the fill plug the breather, didnt notice if there was a third plug higher or not but we were talking about the same one I was just referring to it incorrectly.

yes. i know this thread is old but i figured i'd bump it since everyone is wheeling all summer and changing diff fluid is important!!

 

easy fo sheezy.

i just changed mine. diffs and tcase.

 

Just make sure you can remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug!

 

Diff fluid reeeeks and won't come out of your clothing! Make sure to dress accordingly.

 

make sure you put the drain pulg back in before refilling!

 

Changed mine today. Yay! Tomorrow i'm doing transfer case and front diff.

 

please tell me what size torx (spell?) socket it is. i forgot to look when i did mine today at the local auto hoby shop!

96-98: 10 drain, 12 fill
99-02: 12 both

 

i use compressed air in the fill hole to blow out some of the oil and gunk.
the next time i do my dif oil i am going to do it after a good drive to warm it up some.
