I have a 82 long bed with a 4 speed manual with a 22r motor. The motor has issues. Anyway, thinking down the line, can I swap for a 22r motor like this one ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...649&category=0

It seems more cost effective to go with the 22re than to build up a 22r.

So what are the difference between the two ?

R is carbed, RE is fuel injected. Other then that, nothing. you could buy the RE engine, but unless u have the ecm and wireing harness for it you cant use it. You could still buy that engine though, and put your intake manifold w/ the carb on it and be good to go.


Edit : after looking at the engine in that auction, it wouldnt matter. It dosnt come with any manifolds any how. You can probably find a good engine in a salvage yard some where for less then half that one, that would probably serve you just as well.

the re block is differnt,

if you look at the old r series block head and pistons, they have dome topped, lower compression, the block is quite a bit shorter then a re block is to,

if you get an re block even without fuel injection, you can build it with some seriouse power compared to a r series,

the old r series was just a tractor motor, ran forever, but not much to build power on.

you're also partly wrong. 22R and 22RE are EXACTLY THE SAME as long as they're either '84 and older or '85 and newer. the early engine('81-84) had round exhaust ports, a "tall" head and "short" block with open combustion chambers and volcano domed pistons. the late engine('85-95) had pear shaped exhaust ports, flat top pistons and closed combustion chambers. the only way to tell between the blocks is to look for a flying saucer shaped mark on the driver's side which means that it's a late block. the deck height difference is only 3mm anyway between early and late, you can bolt an early head and timing cover/chain/oil pump/etc on a late block if you get that 3mm machined off.

also, '81 and '82 22Rs aren't compatible with the EFI manifold since they aren't tapped for it -- the 22RE came out in '83.

to answer the original question, a 22R intake manifold will swap directly onto any '81-95 22R or 22RE long block. might have to change the exhaust manfold, though.

ok kyle, you got me, even though thats what i said, but without being fancy and using dates, the old r block is shorter, with domed pistons, the new block is taller, with flat top pistons, better engine, better heads, more power,

the boot patterns on the backs of the blocks are the same, just the deck height was changed, so it should be good

 

ALL R blocks to my knowledge have the same tranny pattern, 22R, 22RE, 20R, 18R etc...

no differences between the pattern between 4wd and 2wd, early, late etc

the 4 speeds in 82 were the "decent" 4x4 4 speeds. 4x4s never got the "better" 4 speeds like the G40 since they all went to 5 speed after '82
