I have landcruiser springs under the rear of my 4runner and spacers in the front. The problem is that the rear sits about 1 to 1.5 inches taller than the front and I dont like it. Most folks probably wouldn't notice it but I do. What I want to know is if it is possible to cut a round off the top of the coil to lower the ride?

Please don't cut the spring. Please. Toyota put a lot of time and money engineering those things. Have you ever seen a lowered Civic hopping around the streets where you live? Those are cut springs.

 

Yes, cutting springs is fine to do. I have land cruiser springs on mine as well, and it sat just a bit high for me in the back. So I took about 3 inches off the top of the coil (dont cut the bottom where it sits on the axle). Works perfect. Just make sure you dont cut too much off, cut only a few inches off at a time until it is the perfect height.

BTW: Nice 4runner!

 

How long have you had the coils in? Remember that those coils don't carry loads well, they do ride/flex great. Do you take the 4runner camping? Have you loaded it with your usual gear? If you get it level without a load, it'll be low in the back when you have your gear in it. You can't have it both ways.

Thanks guys. Springs have been in for over 3 years. These springs are super soft. They are almost to soft. Sometimes the rear feels a little unstable on the highway, but they ride great offroad. I really don't haul much stuff to weigh the rear down. I only will pull a small trailer every now and then. After looking into cutting the springs more, I think that I'm gonna leave them the way they are and do a SAS up front one day to level it out. That way I can go bigger on tires. I'm in the middle of doing a rebuild on my 86 engine then a RUF swap. When I get done with that Im gonna start collecting the parts to SAS the runner. I think that it would be sick with 5.29s and 37s.

 

That's a good choice, cutting changes the spring rate; I wouldn't say it is "fine" to do. I know some people do it, and they might like how it turns out, but spring design is spring design, and cutting a spring changes that. It is more than just a spring rate and length calculation.

How do they feel unstable? Are your shocks in decent condition (and sized for the LC springs)?

I guess what I mean by them feeling unstable is that they are just too soft. It doesn't corner well. Has lots of body roll even with the sway bar.

 

Cutting them down definitely wont help that. That is just the characteristics of these springs. Even with mine cut and tons of weight in the back the body roll is still scary. If you are really concerned about it you could always get yourself a pair of stiffer coils, such as OME and sell your current ones. Yours looks awesome the way it is, and just remember any lifted 4runner is gonna have more body roll than stock, because you are raising the center of gravity

 

I think a slight forward rake is a desirable thing. It looks great like it is now.

I also think that bringing the front up if you want it more even would be better than cutting the springs.

 

I could raise the front more but I have had a problem with the cv boots as is sits now. I wanted to do the locking hub conversion, but for the cost I would be better to SAS it.

 

You could try a beefier sway bar like the addco bar. That might help with the roll.
