Cracked Windshield...interesting tidbit
As I've mentioned multiple times I've been moving stuff from SC to MD and back via U-Haul trailer. Well me being the nice guy I am and my vehicle being limited on speed pulling a U-Haul I let a truck coming off an off ramp in front of me while no one else would. He got infront of me and immediately kicked up a stone that cracked my windsheild, about an 8" long crack now. Thats karma for ya.
Anyway I was calling around getting estimates when my father told me to call my insurance company and see what they say. Since I have a 500 dollar deductible I figured I'd be paying for it, no biggy.
Well I call them and apparently all insurance companies in SC will cover cracked windshields free of charge.
I didnt know this and I dont know how many states do the same thing but I figured I'd pass on this knowledge for anyone that has or will get a cracked windshield and has to save up the money to have it repaired....

My brother works for an autoglass place and he set me up with a PPG windshield for $80 installed and while my insurance policy deductable on any of the glass is only $100 I'd rather give my brother the money.

Same in my state for a chip repair. Any crack over X" (I don't recall, it isn't much) is deemed unrepairable and the windshield is replaced. My last one was on a new Land Cruiser with HSEA UV glass and with OEM parts cost $950 + installation labor. Glad it didn't affect rates and my comp deduct is $100. Around here, windshield replacement is an annual event due to gravel and cinders used for snow and ice traction.

Florida is the same way, no deductible for windshield replacement under state law. Most other states allow it to be covered under the comprehensive coverage so the deductible applies. Most companies will pay for the $50 chip repair since you're not replacing the glass, but then your rates will go up for that repair.

mine is the same, for like $200 a year all my glass is covered.. stone chips, or whatever.. and its nothing out of pocket. although, if it happens over 3 times a year or something like, that you get deemed 'high-risk' and your rates go up...

Kentucky is the same way. I had mine replaced a year or two ago without paying a dime, and I need to have it done again. This second crack occurred roughly in the exact same location a situation. Following a tractor trailer pulling a muddy bull dozer. A rock fell off, bounced, and hit my windshield.
