Cracked Coil - Help Please - simple problem turning complex
OK, I have 1 cracked rear coil. You would think this would be easy to remedy except here is the issue: 98 4runner SR5 4x4 running Progressive Products 1" progressive rate coils (2 front and 2 rear) with longer Rancho 5000s. These coils / shocks gave the truck a nice (but firm) LEVEL lifted look and ride (see pic) - no sagging, not even when towing, and clearly lifted the vehcile more than just 1".
Problem: Progressive Products is no longer in business so I have no ability to just repalce rear coils with same so as to ensure ride and look stay the same. Put another way, coils and shocks match all around so if I go back to OEM (no lift) or, for example maybe Ol'man emu I run the risk of either not being level or having to replace rear shocks or both or worse, replaceing all front & rear coils / shocks so as to get level lift.
Options considered thus far are:
1. Try to find used Progressive Products 1" rear lift coils - No luck so far.
2. Go with OEM coils and add spacers - issue: dont really know what size spacer to get so as to prevent sagging or high butt and/or having to replace shocks should this set up require a different leanght (though if I do it right it should not). PLUS the OEM coils are not progressive rate so when I tow I suspect a saggy butt.
3. Try to find an aftermarket OEM progressive rate coil and then use a spacer. Issue, takes care of progressive rate / towing issue, but still really have no idea what size spacer to get.
4. Go with Old man Emu 900 Rear Lift Coils (says up to 1.5" of lift and hope that the lift gained still works with shocks and is mostly level with front.
5. Rear Coilovers - way too much $$$ at this point.
So, any tips / ideas or direction would be very much appreciated. Thx,
matt

Most aftermarket don't make their own springs, they buy them and sell them as their own. If you have any literature from that old company, that would be one place to look.
Otherwise, I'd say that option #4 is your best bet.

As with any product, the coil springs you need to replace have a spec. I'd try to find the height, spring rate, progressivity, etc, and then armed with that information try to find as close a match as possible. Also, it's unlikely that there are a zillion coil spring manufacturers out there. Once you have the info, I'd suggest trying to go to one of those mfgrs. Also, said mfgr might know where Progressive/Performance Products got their springs.
I hope this helps.

Gents,
Thx - you are right, I meant Performance Products.
--I have tried to find the actual specs but have failed at finding such (so far). If only I could find an old catalog.
--But, great tip on Eibach as I will see if they have something similiar.
Am still looking - hard - as I consider the vehicle unsafe to drive at this point.

If you got cracks on both rear coils, shouldn't you be looking at a different manufacturer instead of chasing after who made your current coils? there is a big chance that there is either a manufacturing problem or a design problem relating to those coils.
consider changing to the 1999-2000 MY 4Runner tall coils or get the OME coils
I got nothing against eibach or performance products. but having cracks on both coils is a red flag for me.

Sorry if I was not clear - only 1 coil is cracked. Best I can tell from rust. Am doing a search though and leaning toward the OMEs but as mentioned above, am worried that if I can't match rear then I will find myself changing shocks & coils all around so as to maintain lift and level.
thx again,
thx again,
