Has anyone ever converted a 3rd generation 4Runner 2wd to a 4wd? Any ideas, suggestions, or comments on where to start. Does anyone know exactly what all i would have to add?

 

I think it would be way to expensive to convert to 4wd. Your best bet is to trade it it or sell yours to get a 4wd.

 

that is probably super difficult... i would look for a 4x4 with a blown engine or something then swap yours out to it.

 

Converting 2WD to 4WD will be way more expensive that just selling your 4Runner and getting 4WD model instead. I mean unless of course you have about $7,000 - $8,000 extra laying around...

Someone in this forum did convert this DOUBLE CAB PRE-RUNNER into a 4X4.

I am not exactly sure who it is however, but I did read his signature which stated such.

 

Hmm, I had never thought of this before....

Wouldn't it be cheaper to take a 2WD and turn it into a SAS'd trail rig than converting an already 4WD vehicle? This is assuming we are talking about new vehicles. Of course I don't know the price difference of 2WD vs 4WD when new.

My thoughts... wait for the new Marlin T-Case that allows for independant selection of front/4wd/rear, Hi/neutral/low. Then pickup a solid front axle, add an arb and go crazy.

If you are looking for an awesome trail rig this might be cheaper.

 

Just trade your 2WD in and get a 4WD.

u can get manual hubs from a tacoma and all the front 4wd components from a junk yard for a lot cheaper than u might think. the mounting points in the frame are all there. all you would have to do after that is get a new tranny/t-case and driveshafts.
it wont cost 7-8k, unless u go solid axle.
if you already have a lot of money into your truck, then it might be more cost effective to convert it. but if your truck is stock, i would say what everyone else said and just trade it for a 4x4

here's some info about converting an 89-94 2wd to a SASed 4wd. not sure how much of it would apply to the next generations...

You need to make front and rear Shackles, mount the shackle hangers in the frame, make and mount the front hanger and the rear hanger. Also need to fab a cross member for the tranny and cutt all the stuff off the frame to do the SAS. The truck I just bought is also an auto so I will have to mount a Clutch master cylinder and hange new pedals and bypass the park safety switch. I plan to do double cases on mine at the same time and some other goodies. Gears would be nice to do at the same time, I have gears and electric lockers to go in mine. The e brake may be a bit touchy as the cable set up is different I believe You acan always go with the All pro transfer case ebrake to eliminate thise, I had it on my last truck and loved it. For the power steering box you can use the front hole that is there on the 2wd box as the back hole for the 4wd box. You will also have to cut holes in the floor for the shifters. This is no easy job to do but at least you can mount all the spring hangers and get the frame tubes installed before hand while you are still driving the truck and waiting for all the parts to arrive in the mail. This job is only worth doing providing you have someone to help you or you can do the work yourself. But when you consider the cost diference between the 2wd and the 4wd not to mention the 2wd are usually in great shape body wise. I have been hoarding parts for this swpa for a long time and have some extras if you decide to do it. Do some searching on Pirate but for the most part the swap is pretty straight forward and for guys planning a SAS I don't know why anyone would bother starting with a 4wd.

some of those depend on if your vehicle is wired somewhat for it or not. like the under dash harness. some rigs are partially wire for 4wd and some are not. anyhow it would still be quite expensive to do it right.
