Check out this engine

Thought this was pretty nifty, not toyota related but still pretty cool.

If they can put that into a small sporty car I'd say Isuzu would be onto something.

Is it just me or is this just a simple superchager. You raise the compression ratio, and inject more fuel for more power. I bet you have to use 93 octane with that engine. Seems like a mod that could be done to most fuel injected engines. Hmmmmm.....

Direct injection is far from that simple. In direct injection the injector is moved from from inject fuel into the intake runners to directly injecting fuel into the cylinder. Ok, so maybe it is simple. It actually won't require you to run a higher octane and will allow you to run higher compression on the same octane. If they bumped up compression to about 12.5:1 and gave it a variable timing system, I bet it could make well over 300 without even pushing itself. This would make a great sports car. Come on Isuzu, you listening?

Good luck modifying that engine. Cool idea though.

I think they made a DI motorcycle engine that made a sick amount of power for the weight. The DI can be run 2 ways (either 4 stroke or 2 stroke) with the latter making crazy HP and surprisingly little emissions. There is no need to mix the oil and gas either (the crankcase is sealed). I'll try to dig up a link.

DI definately show quite a bit of promise for future engines though.
One tough part is to find a 300 PSI injector....try to find those on a parts store shelf!

Why does the injector need so much pressure?

It has to do with the period of injection. In a typical multi-port fuel injection engine it can inject fuel for a long period of time. In a GDI(gasoline direct injection) engine it has a very short period in which in can inject fuel into the combustion chamber, so it needs more pressure to inject the same amount of fuel. Well actually, GDI engines inject less gas because it mixes with the air better, but you get the point.

I really want one of these engines.

Glad to help.

Now someone just needs to make one of these with a variable timing system.
