Get the codes pulled and post up the results. Otherwise, you will get 20 different guesses that won't help you a bit.

I was just wondering if it was common for the traction control, and VSC to turn off any time the check engine light comes on.

Yep. Lots of faults can bring up all those lights. There are a lot of things that can take ABS out, for example, and with no ABS, you have no traction control or VSC. Best thing to do is get the codes pulled (some places do it for free, like autozone). You can't diagnose a problem with the lights alone.

Get the code number(s) first and then post back and we'll try and help you diagnose the issue.
....and yes, as was mentioned, some OBD codes can turn off VSC and ABS.

mine is like that too. I'll swing by autozone and see what they can do.

I got code: P1135 Manufactured controlled fuel and air metering

Does this mean I need a new mass air sensor or can it be cleaned?

All I have on the 4runner is the amsoil air filter.

All you need to do is clean the MAF and then pull the battery to reset the system. You'll be good to go. Give that a try.

Nope... code P1135 refers to bad heating circuit in your A/F sensor (which for a cali spec truck is the O2 sensor in front of the catalytic converters)... Otherwise known as bank #1 - Sensor #1.

It is not a code for your MAF.

The code comes in to signal that the current in the heater circuit of your A/F sensor is either too high or too low. Try troubleshooting the sensor itself or there may be a short in the sensor wiring.

I bought the o2 sensor from toyota for a whopping $230 and put it on. I reset the computer and the lights are now off.

I checked olympus import parts too, and they sold the sensor for $250 so I don't feel like I got ripped too bad. Would have been nice to know someone and get an employee discount, but oh well.

I wasn't sure that "bank 1 sensor 1" was the o2 sensor before the cat, but I googled it and found a write-up with pics. liquid wrench is your friend!

Thanks for the help GSGALLANT!

Yikes! You could have got an 02 sensor at URD for $79.

Oh well, at least you got it fixed!

Simple things

... for anyone else following this thread.

Two minor issues that can cause the engine check light, VSC Trac, and VSC Trac Off lights to turn on:

1) loose gas cap - yep, I was surprized as well, but the dealer checked my cap and sure enough it was loose. Lights turned off a few days later... which they also said was normal.

2) low brake fluid. Makes sense since this is a braking system.

Okay, I got the same here. The lights on the dash and the code was the same. But this happened right after I installed a new radio. I know the ABS has some equipment in the dash behind the ash tray. Hey, there is very little room in this truck (the Japanese utilize every little space).

I had the code pulled, then erased and was good to go for one day. Then it came back. All this from just brushing up against a wire in the dash?

Regarding this issue, I have a 2001 4runner, also with the P1135 code (Air/Fuel sensor bank 1/sensor 1).

Can anyone tell me or show me a photo of where this is located? My Haynes manual doesn't seem to give any indication.

Thanks in advance!

I crawled under the truck to see if I could make it out. Coming down at the backside of the engine I saw this:

I believe this is one of the Air/fuel sensors but I'm not entirely sure if it's the one I need to change out. I'm guessing that the cat in the foreground?
