Check Engine Light... I have Had Enough...

(repost since first one misteriously disapeared...)
Today on my way to a party...
While I was waiting at a stop sign for traffic to past...
I notices something orange illuminate my steering wheel...
I was like, what the hell was that?
Looked down...
My Check Engine Light was on solid...

But The Runner is running fine...

No Smells...
No Sounds...
No Shakes...

It is a:
97' 4Runner SR5 3.4L V6 Auto 4WD
99+k
Oil change last done 2K ago
All fluids check out normal...
K&N air filter
Belt changed at 60k like recommended....
Not due for another 2k...

I have searched with no luck...
I am sorry for asking again...
But everyone has some sort of symptom associated with the light...
I do not...

What is a common problem for that light to come on for my make model and engine?

I see the MAF is one but it looks like there are symptoms involved with it...

I am going to auto-zone tomorrow to get the code(or codes) pulled to see whats up...
I just can't afford another repair...
This is a Toyota...
I never though I would have this problem...

But any ideas at all as what it could be?

Could be a lot of things - an 02 sensor, any number of things can kick that light. Most likely inexpensive to fix.. Could be expensive of course, pull the code and you'll get more help!

you could have a dirty maf, you could have had a misfire happen, lots of things, your local discount or advance auto parts store will pull your codes for free, and after you fix them they can clear them for you

There are literally hundreds of codes that can cause the MIL to come on. (http://www.wattora.com/mods/obdii) There's no point in guessing at it. Get it read, then ask about fixing the problem.

Toyota's are dependable, but if you expected it to never have any problems at all, parts never to wear out and for it to last forever, you didn't pay enough

Do yourself a favor, lose the K&N and run a stock filter, even if the code is for the MAF. That will eliminate one reason for the MIL to turn on.

Actually I get something sort of similar. No symptoms or anything, except that the check engine light only comes on a couple miles into the first drive after I unplug the battery and then switches itself off 1 or 2 days later. It's really weird but since there aren't any symptoms, I haven't really done anything about it.

Anyone know what that could be about?

Only mod I've done that could have had any impact is a K&N FIPK.

Of course it is just a guess with out a code but I would say it is your MAF- since you have K&N.
Try to clen the MAF....

You do not need an obvious sympton to rear it's ugly head prior to getting a CEL. Your sympton could be very subtle - like gas mileage...

HAHAHAHAH!!!!!
The scary part about this post is that is exactly how it went down last night!!!!

SO anywho...

Got the code pulled about 15 min ago...
P0136 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

So yeah thats my prob...
Now I must look into fixing it...

::Still laughing::

So any ideas...
I will do another search again since I did see that the O2 censor was another common Check Engine Light problem...

Is this something that can be pulled out cleaned put back in and will be fine?
Or am I looking into getting another sensor?

Also the guy at AutoZone told me that the light had come on twice
This confused me since I remember the light coming on once and staying solid...
Maybe if I actually looked down at the dash a little more while driving I might have notcied it come on once before...

::Still Laughing::

I have become way to predictable haven't I?

You know I have noticed a decrease in gas mileage latly...
But I thought that was just because I needed to clean the K&N
(which I did 2 nights ago)
But after cleaning the filter it was back up to par...

The last time I got a CEL light was on my olds...
Found out some fuel return valve wasn't wrorking...
Which explained why every time i took the car over 80mph that I litteraly watch the full gauge plumet....
I had to drive at 50mph for a week before we could get it in...

if i remember correctly people have cleaned there o2 sensors before, im not sure how you would have to search, but lucky for you these things arent that expensive. depending on how many miles you have you might just want to replace it, i had to replace mine around 85k and it wasnt that bad... good luck
