Bypass the OE tranny cooler?

Several people on here have either the spin on type your link shows or an inline type (Magnefine, Wix). I think it's a good idea. Not that it's necessary but it can't do anything but help as far as I'm concerned.

Midget had posted pics of his setup for one of these transmission threads. I think Fogrunner did as well. All posts and feedback from folks I know seem to love them. No problems. Some actually allow a transmission gauge to be attached to them. A friend of mine, for his setup on his Chevy 2500HD, put one of those magnets that wrap around the filters on his filter in 2008. We pulled it in April and cut open the filter. Lots of little metal shavings. I'll post pics if he still has them.
I run a Magnefine and have nothing but praise for it. I am planning on opening mine by the end of next month and posting pics.....

Here is an article that you and other members should take a peek at.

It is supposed to work best right before the cooled ATF returns to the tranny. I have mine located at the end of the sender line, before the ATF gets cooled. So far the 340F nor the Magnefine have not grenaded yet.
My friend's uncle, who owns a tranny shop, puts Magnefines on 80% of his rebuilt transmissions, with less than .06% of them failing within a year. He says the filter is a wise $20 investment, but not a silver bullet for an aging or abused transmission.
Coonhound, ever find that replacement tranny?

I think I found one but it is the earlier 1999 version but they swear their tech can change a plug and it will work . Little under $300 with a 30 day warranty . Now just trying to decide , spend the money for that or spend $200 and replace the slonoids not knowing for sure if that will work either .
Thanks for asking
Think I figured out part of my problem though . I never thoughpulling the trt to take it out of OD when pulling the trailers , I didn't haul them much though . I will be so glad when I get a new 1ton truck ...lol

I just installed the Hayden 679 on my rig today. Nice fit, installed it dead center of radiator, it's nice and snug up to the condenser with some rubber pads at each corner using my own cheap brackets. Install was quick and painless in my opinion.
I eliminated the radiator milkshake maker and used the longer stock cooler hose to couple the radiator's internal atf heater off in case of leak thru in the future. I bought 6' of extra hose just in case and it was more than enough. I set mine up so the hot atf enters at the top of the cooler from the passenger side and the cool atf exits at the bottom. Easy hose route like many have done by the a/c lines.
The 679 is a big, quality cooler. I can't see much room, or need, for anything bigger. Living in the Valley of the Sun and bypassing the stock "atf heater," I wanted the biggest cooler I could easily fit. I'm not worried about cold fluid.
I will post up some atf temps if I can read them on my scantool some time later.

Keeping this thread alive. Received my new TruCool. I hope to install it in the next couple of weeks. Wish I could do it sooner as this strawberry milkshake business has me paranoid. Only had the truck a month, am a noob and this is my first "mod". All of the info and pics here have been invaluable and at least makes me feel empowered. Hopefully that translates well when it comes time to actually do this.
Thanks all!
Thanks all!

OK, so after the suggestions made here and reading that other thread about placement, I took the afternoon to move the cooler to a better location.
Totally fixed my issue. Relived and I feel retarded at the same time. The amount of air that gets pulled over the cooler from the fan is impressive when you get it super close to the condenser. Don't know if I would zip tie it to the condenser; I've never seen that NOT do damage to a radiator. Bad idea, especially with vibration off road. Worth it to make some brackets.
Excuse the wretched pics.

Oil cooler on the right, which is how far the trans cooler was from the condenser to start. Now it's tucked right up against it. Maybe 1/8" gap.

Moved it up 5 inches. Not as pretty as before but it works.

Sits right in the grille, with 2/3s being above the bumper line.

This is why being in the garage in AZ during the summer is absolute hell...
Before, temps would climb as high as 240º, and rest no lower than 210º
Now, temps are at 185º and barely peak at 200º. And this is at 111º ambient air temp, 130º under the hood.

even with hose clamps
I used hose clamps on every connection, maybe I did not tighten them enough but my leak is coming from the hose to cooler connections.
As far as the elbows & tee fittings where I put my sensor on, I used plumbers tape and JB welded the mofos, its still leak free.
I'll tackle the leaks today and move the cooler between the condenser and rad.

Are you using the small hose clamps? Hose clamps too big won't apply even pressure. Also don't get them too tight. You using the 3/8" hose?

Yes, I used 3/8" hoses but you know how they vary in inside diameter? some are slightly larger. anyways, im ready to start and im looking at the condenser, is it easy to remove it? or should i just mount it in front of the condenser?
#378
Put the cooler directly in front of the condenser, it should be right up against it.
With the hoses to the cooler, don't worry about tightening the clamps there too much.
I am not sure why you would want to move the condenser in the first place.

Never had a leak on one yet.
