I'm building a Trail Rig in my driveway right know (weather permitting its the wet coast) its going to be 22R powered but I can't decide on what to use for a tranny. I'm thinking an auto but do not know anything about Toyota autos there pros and cons compared to the 5spd. Any imput would be great.

I wheel with an auto/V6. The worst problem I've experinced was on one very steep hill with the front and rear locked (no wheel spin at all), the engine didn't have the torque to pull it up. I needed a lower gear, like a crawler. I am running 5.29:1 ratio. 5.71's would have been better but not as good as a crawler and I don't think anyone makes a crawler for an auto.

I'm was also toying with the idea of a doubler or new T-case gears but also don't know if you can do this with an auto

yeah, you can do the dual tcase with an auto.

you can't do a doubler with a 22R and an auto. besides, there's no 4wd auto that will work with a 22R, you need a 22RE and the appropriate auto ecu.

well, you _could_ use an auto with a 22R, but it'd have to be out of a carbed truck, celica or corona and you'd have to run divorced transfer cases with OTT's adapter. not really worth the hassle in my book though.

the easiest way to go is to run a good transmission like a W56 and get a marlin doubler kit. if you really want low gears, get 4.7s for the rear case...it'd give you unbelievable control over where you go.
