I'd change it now, the problem is, if you drive it till it makes noise, then you'll be looking at replacing the joints as well.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever herd. How is it the shops fault that YOU had more problems? They found them for you and fixed them before they left you stranded or costing you more. You could have refused to have them repaired. It's not like you had to pay more because you went to a shop. I can't believe you said that!

Definatly replace the axle and not just the boot. Then go get manuel hubs.

It'd say some gear grease, they'll have it down at NAPA, or any other auto parts store.
no no no no!

You have to use the right stuff - the joints are not made out of your standard cast-iron-any-old-grease-will-do type metal. That, plus the heat that they have to put up with will make some greases break down.

Get the CV Boot kit from a dealer, you're gonna need it anyway. In fact, get two so you have an extra set. They're only $40ish a piece.

The kit comes with TWO kinds of grease. The BROWN grease goes on the OUTER joint, the GREY grease goes on the INNER joint.

There's a step-by-step in this thread along with other info:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/cv-boots-done-48273/

To note, one person mentions that he found new axles ready-to-run (boots and lubed!) at Car Quest for $66.

I know this thread is 5 1/2 years old and my truck doesn't have cv axles anymore, or the same motor, gears, tires, or rear suspension, but based on recent threads, bumping hella old threads just to comment on them seems to be the cool thing to do!!!

I appreciate the bumped thread I am going to get gears this wednesday 4.88 front and rear and just noticed a blown inner boot on the passenger side.

I have manual hubs but my question is will this be a easy repair since a shop is doing the gears don't they have to take the front axles out anyway?
Should I get all the boots replaced?

There are a couple things that will make changing out cv's for one pound out the studs on the diff and replace with grade 8 bolts. Are you paying the shop to install new gears or to swap out the whole diff?

In the front they are just going to do gears, Do they have to pull the half shafts anyway?

Well the answer is yes, they have to pull the half shafts anyway to do the gears so I bought some from Kragen so I can have the warranty and the shop doing the gears is going to put them in for free. It was Perfect timing to have a boot blow out Kiling Two birds with one stone.
