Benefits of exhaust mods?

I just "inherited" a '94 4Runner 4WD from my wife (she bought a Sequoia and the dealer tried to screw us on the trade-in), and have decided to make it my new toy. Since the 3.0 v6 is such a dog, I was wondering what kind of improvements I could get through intake/exhaust mods. Is a full exhaust (headers to tail pipe) worth the time and expense? Any idea what perf. gains I could expect? Thanks for helping a newbie!

I can't speak as to the 94, but my '96 (with a different engine than yours) really perked up with headers and exhaust. A noticable difference all along the power range.

I think it makes a difference! I put headers on, freeflow cat and a dyno-flow 50 series muffler and I did an airbox mod- (Look in tech write up section), and 2 1/4" pipes, and I replaced that very restrictive crossover, very cool sounding, but also I noticed more performance! I get 21 - 24 mpg! The problem w/the 3.0 is it can't breathe!

Good Luck!

I think that's more than just an exhaust and I hoped you noticed something.

If I had it to do over again I would just go with a cat back exhaust ($150) and drop in filter ($50) with a modded air box. Done.
I'm into it about $1000 now and can tell a difference but not $800 worth. Although I do love wrapping it out and hearing the headers sing.
