belt snapped, quick question

While driving a squealing sound occurred along with smoke. Transmission light, brake light, and battery light came on. After stopping I turned the truck off and checked under the hood. 2nd generation 4runner with a 3.0 automatic. right away I saw why the truck squealed, the v belt had snapped and was a bit tangled up, causing squealing. The other belts are melting due to the fan and fan pulley not spinning. My question is this, does the fan pulley rotate when a belt is not attached? Any help would be appreciated

sounds like you need the False Water pump bracket replaced. It locked up on mine.....
Look on the net, don't bother with the dealer, they want around 650.00 for it....

I found one online for around 40.00.......

It's a fun job replacing it too

Toyota wants over $500 for the OEM part, there are aftermarket parts available for alot less so don't get raped on this one! Remember if you get a junkyard part, the bearing may not have much life left due to the age so aftermarket will probably be best.

The good news is that the design allows the water pump to keep pumping so the engine probably didn't overheat. It is pretty scary when if fails though... makes your mind go crazy trying to figure out how everything locked-up

Has anyone simply considered the belt broke. First check to see if the fan will still turn. it won't turn on its own with no belt. How old were the belts that were on there?

Yes, first remove all the belts and check to see if the fan pulley is turning, check the alternator and power steering as well. If the fan pulley has seized you'll need a new one, if not just replace all the belts.

I thought he said the other belts melted because the pullley wasn't moving.....

I might have read wrong though

Yeah, when mine locked up, it was 5:00 in the morning, stuck on the side of the road, it really sucked......

I had just replaced the belts about 5000 miles ago to....
oh well

but the fan bracket might not be moving because it was wrapped up in the belt that broke.

The fan (attached to the fan bracket) should spin freely if there are not belts on it.

the v belt broke, I took it out and drove like 20 miles home, the belt was wrapped around the altonatior and fan pulley.....the fan pulley does not turn unless the belt turns it right????????? the only other belt that melted is the power steering belt, because it wraps around the fan pulley....my question is the fan pulley spins only with assist of the belt, not all buy itself right???????

If the fan pulley won't turn with the belts removed then the bearing has seized, it should spin very easily. That's probably what broke and melted the belts.

The bearing is IN the fan bracket. It is non servicable. Youll have to get an entire new fan bracket. ~$100 online for the part, and quite a few hrs of wrenching to replace it.

Search for fan bracket or timing belt for more info on how to replace

One thing about asking questions when people are at work ... it may take a while before people can go out an look at the truck to give you a good answer.

At first, I thought this was kinda a stoopid question - of course the fan will only turn if the fn belt is good! Now that I've looked, I see what you're asking. Either the v-belt OR the flat ribbed belt should be enough to turn the fan, so if you only lost the power steering Vbelt, you should be OK. Since the fan won't turn by hand, I would definitely suspect the false bracket bearing assembly. 20 miles without a fan is a long ways - how much did the temp rise? Hope you didn't overheat it - leads to headgasket problems...

This got me thinking - when this bearing goes out, could it lock up the water pump, thereby stripping the timing belt and fragging the valve assembly?

sigh...... on a 3vze or 5vze the water pump is driven off the timming belt.

The fan connects to a bracket that holds a simple bearing. it "hovers" over the entire timming belt mess and is only driven by other belts comming off the crank pully.

so if the fan bracket craps out (often between 125 and 150K miles) the water pump and timming belt are UNAFFECTED.

while your in there you might as well do the service to the other stuff. (timming belt, idler, pullies, water pump)

it costs a bit more, but much less headache then having to tare it all down again in 20K or 40K when one of those other items craps out
