awesome keyless ignition

Compustar makes a awesome keyless ignition/ entry/ alarm with pager alert/ vehicle paging system for a 4 runner with a manual transmission . I have one on my 96 and it works from a 1/4 mile away just great! Start up the heater or air conditioner and let er rip.

That'll be really handy in the summer when I'm mountian biking and want to come back to a nice cool truck.

DEI Alarm

What model has that kind of range? I have a DEI Viper 550 ESP that includes remote start and I've added some other stuff. My range is only about 150 ft. Is there some sort of add on antenna to boost the range? I want to be able to use the RS from inside my office.

How do you like that 550? I was checking one out but my shop quoted me a bit high of a price...almost 7 hundred i believe installed with glass breakage sensors. they said most of the charge was in the work they had to do to get the remote start in.

What did you pay if you dont mind me asking?

550

It's been on for 2 1/2 years - couldn't find the receipt. It was around $700 I think. Remote starts take a little extra work, but most of it is still under the dash... and the relays come prewired. I used to install alarms and stereos, so I know... My price included them adding three window roll up modules (all 4 side windows up and down and tailgate window up and down - each module can only handle 2 windows max) The window modules are alot harder than the remote start from a labor standpoint - mainly because you have to take off all of the door panels and some other interior trim...

I think its the DEI/Python 553.
Yes, it does have a large antenna that helps boost range. I will be having it installed sometime next month. Can't wait.

so they do make these for manuals. I was about to buy a remote starter on sale for about 50 bucks, but it said for automatics only. i guess if it was for a manual you'd have to leave your e-brake on and out of gear. duh... where could i buy just a remote starter for a manual cheap? do you know? thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, don't you also have to depress your clutch to start the engine? I'm sure that could be bypassed though.

Remote start for manuals???

This is a major NO-NO from what I've learned. There has always been a way to bypass it, but it is a major safty risk. (It's easy to bypass the clutch switch.) Essentially, you are counting on the vehicle owner to be sure he/she leaves the vehicle in neutral. If not, when the RS tries to start the car, it will lurch forward putting bystanders at risk. The only way I could see something safe like this available now is that the alarm must sense both the vehicle out of gear and the emergency brake on. I'm not wild about the idea...

its not a really good idea, no, but would be nice in the cold maine winters and having to drive to school every day in the early morning.

and no, you dont have to push in the clutch.. at least on most toyota's i've seen there is a "clutch start/cancel" button. you could probably wire the starter into this.

My compustar system has a switch in the parking brake, the transmission, the ignition, the driver side door, the back door, and the brake pedal. so its pretty easy to breach the system. I could never start it up in gear to "lunge" foreward. the only problem i have is that I can drive it w/o turning the ignition on and end up in the middle of a intersection w/ a stalled runner after hitting the brake.

Shutdown upon braking

I always forget to put my key in after using the RS. Thankfully, it quits in my driveway, not an intersection (when I put my brake on to get out of park). I think I forget at least 1/2 of the time. My poor starter...
