was reading on another forum and saw a new type of locker, well new to me atleast, it was the aussie locker. Looks simple and strong. anybody here run one?

yeah, if its everything that they say it is, it will have the benefits of an auto locker w/out the clicking and clanking. unfortunately, they don't make them for the 3rd gen 4runners, so ill have to wait

Aussies are available for 3rd gen 4runners. I just spoke with a guy last night who has one in his 2001 who convinced me to buy one for my 1999. He said it was as complicated as replacing a front half shaft. His review is posted below. If you wait a few weeks I'll order mine and put together a great writeup for this.

The thing I hear the most about the 'lunchbox lockers' like this is that they are not so great on a DD. Even though the manufacturer says they can be. Wet roads/chirps etc... Good luck and let us know how it goes!

 

Do not put an auto locker in an automatic if you value your tires.

And they're fine for a DD. I have one in mine, but its a 5 speed. i just clutch around turns.

I can't believe I resurrected a 7 year old thread..... Luckily this isn't Pirate4x4....

Anyway I installed the Aussie last week and am still learning how to drive on pavement with it. I do have a five speed like the previous poster so I do clutch and let it click while in tight turns vs gassing and chirping tires.

 

exactly. the only time you really need to worry about it is in the snow. Im really used to driving my truck, but i have no problem driving it in the rain. Hell, it rained last night, and someone ran a stop sign as i was going through that intersection, smashed 1st gear, whipped the rear end out, got completely sideways and finished it with a beautiful correction. lockers are loads of fun. hah

 

I run a Spartan in the back of my '86 and it's great. My rig is a daily driver that sees plenty of wet and snowy roads and I haven't had any trouble at all with it. As long as I drive like sane person, I don't even know it's there.

 

My old Aussie ate through 2 sets of tires within 50K miles. All the springs inside sheared shortly after installation. I don't necessarily blame Aussie for it though, it was probably an installation error. If you arn't gonna install it yourself, make sure someone who actually knows what they are doing installs it. My local offroad shop couldn't even figure out how to do it right obviously.

 

I got one for mine about 6 months ago. But its been sitting in the back seat of my rig until my enigne is done being rebuilt.
