Hey I have a 1994 4Runner 3.0 and I was just wondering how much of a change people saw in gas mileage and power after installing 33" tires on their 4runner. I am asking because I am considering it but I just dont want to have to regear. By the way its a 5sd. If anyone has experience wiith this let me know.

if yours came stock with 31's then it would have 4.56 gears. I don't think 33's would hurt power too much with 4.56's.
my truck came with 28's and 4.10's and even though I have 31's on it now, it's still pretty quick.

 

I would think the decreased width of the 9.5's would definitely help compared to the 12.5's, but honestly I don't know. It would probably still have an effect.

 

SolidDigital is right, if you have the 4:56s, which you more than likely have if the truck came stock with 31s, then you might be ok. if it feels slugish, then you might want to move up to 4:88s. that's generally a perfect fit for 33s. it will rev a little higher on the freeway with the 4:88s.

you will feel a big difference in your braking though. 33's are quite heavier and larger than 31's. you might also think about putting a beefier steerinbg dampener up front too. the steering box will feel the strain.

 

hmm, are you talking about your 98? I always thought the 95 and older 3.0's had 4.56 if it came from factory with 31's

i forgot about the 4:30s. that was a weird ratio they stuck in there. was that for automatics only?

 

never heard of the stick shifts havin 4.30's.. I meant 5spds in the above post.. it should be 4.88's for the auto and 31s.

 

yeah, i thought those were on the auto models only.

 

i can vouch for the 4.88's in the auto, thats what my 93 has. from all i have researched, the 4.88's are what you regear to with a 5 spd and 33's. hope this helps.

FWIW... I have a 3rd gen, V6, Auto that came with 28" tires and 3.90s. I upgraded to 32" ATs and kept the 3.90s. They was a performance hit, but it wasn't too bad - only noticable when towing or accelerating up steep hills. Then I upgraded to 33/12.5-15s with the 3.90s and took a big performance hit. IMO, 33" MTs are too much for 3.90s, but that's on a 3rd gen, so take it for what it's worth.

 

Well not only am I worried about performance but gas mileage as well. I used to have a 97 Wrangler and when I put 33's on there with that 4 cyl with 4.10's gas mileage dropped dramatically. Anyone notice a big change in this wihen they put on 33's?

 

yep - stock I got about 300miles per tank. with 32s I got about 280. Now I'm getting about 220.

 

Yeah that sounds sort of like what happened with my old jeep. Although you are driving a 3rd gen. auto... Right now I am hovering around 300 miles per tank

 

you will take a hit on gas mileage - if you have 4.56s you should be fine for gearing as those bigger tires would effectivelly give you around a 4.10 axle ratio....

the BFGs are a big 33 at 32.7
Dunlop makes a 33 that is 32.3" that would be a good compromise and save big on gas mileage with tread, revs/mile,. and size difference

you'll probably see a big drop, i went from p225/75r15 to 31x10.5, (9.5% diff in diameter) and my mileage went from 16mpg, to 11.2mpg.. DAMN! now, i wish i didnt figure this out... anyways.. continuing where I was going.. a 31x10.5 to a 33x9.5 is an additional 6.4% in tire diameter, doing some rough comparisons, i'd say it would drop my mileage down to 7.5mpg

(sorry for hijacking) now that I've figured out my mileage to be 11.2.. how can I get that back up a bit? already replaced the fuel filter, drop-in k&n filter, ran some injector cleaner, replaced the hg and timing belt this week (these numbers are from before that)

 

Hmm yeah gas mileage is a big deal to me personally. I think I am just going to go ahead and get some new 31x9.5's. Thanks for they advice everyone!

 

Green 91...that's really low, especially for only 31's. Seems like somethings not right. I have 31's, and I consistently average ~14.5 mpg including going 70+ on the freeway always.

 

I have 33's with 4.10 gears, its pretty aweful on the freeway but around town its just fine. I still get 18mpg in town, but i have a 22re with some engine work. Hill pose a threat too, just regear!!

 

I didn't read that anyone had their speedo/odo recalibrated after they upgraded tires. You have to remember that the tires have a bigger diameter and will rotate more slowly then a smaller tire. It would be better for odometer, though. There are some calculators out there that measure how much speed your off with which gear ratio and tire dia.
I think I remember with 4.10's and 33's your actual speed is like 10% faster than what the speedo is indicating.
