99 4Runner Wont Move Forward in Drive
I just purchased a 1999 4Runner SR5 4WD for my Wife. Super clean, 95,125 miles.
Problem - when backing out of the driveway in reverse (about 15 seconds), the car will not move forward in Drive, or in 2nd (automatic trans). If placed in L, it will move forward. Feels like the drivetrain is bound up when in D or 2nd.
This problem is repeatable when the car is has been sitting for several hours and is cold. Problem not experienced when car is warmed up.
Can drive the car up up the hill and out of the drive way in L, and by then, D or 2nd function properly
After car warms up (about 10 min). No problems at all in D, 2nd, or Low.
Any and all suggestions welcome,
Thanks

Scuba,
Yes, on fluid/filter. Im going to purchase a new filter, gasget, drain plug gasket from the dealer and replace as much fluid as I can drain (have thought about a tranny flush, but I want to make sure I know what the problem/fix is before I pay for a complete flush).
Thanks

You weren't overly descriptive of how the truck really feels when the problem is happening, so it's tough to guess as to whether it's actually a transmission problem, of if something in the drivetrain is actually "binding" or providing resistance. I know you did mention that the drivetrain feels like it's bound up, so it leads me to believe that it could potentially be caused by a sticking rear parking brake bellcrank not allowing the rear brakes to fully disengage. When you notice the problem is happening, jack the rear of the vehicle up and make sure both rear wheels turn freely. If not, take a look at the parking brake bellcranks, and see if they move freely. My friend's Tacoma had the same sort of symptoms, and that's what I found his problem to be.
