Can anyone please give me an idea why our 94 Toyota Truck has absolutely no power? Its a 22RE and it just had a head gasket replaced and there still is no power. We bypassed the cat and tried a new air flow meter, and those made no difference. Any ideas will be helpful! Thank you

bypassing the cat was probably not a good idea as the check engine light might get triggered and the cars computer make it run wierd due to the abnormal emissions picked up by the sensors.... did the people who did the gasket get the timing properly? what about the valve clearnces? those are a big deal

 

I had EXACTLY the same problem...I replaced my head gasket and when I got done it had no power...I haven't gotten it all the way taken care of yet, but here's what I did to partially solve the problem. For some reason I was able to manually (turning the distributor) advance the timing without getting a ping. When I advanced it far enough it made good power, but it gets crappy gas mileage...the next thing someone has told me to try is the throttle position sensor, as that sends info back to the ecu, which controls the spark and thus the timing. So, when I get home for break I'm going to check that. The other thing you should check is to make sure you got the timing chain back in the right spot. If it's a link off it'll make bad power...although it should run like hell too. Anyways, that's all I've got thus far. If you get yours fixed PLEASE send me an im or pm or whatever and let me know what made it happen.

 

The heads been off 2 times in the last 6 months by 2 different people. So we can be sure that the timing was done right and thats ok. Its funny to hear my sister talking about no power...

what you talking about no power? my 22re got up to 70 mph today in 30 seconds with the wind going with me! no power, jeez!

 

yeah, i would say that the biggest reason you have no power is because it is a stock 22re. Especially if it is a 4wd. There are a few guys/gals on here that have done stuff to make them a little beastlier (port and polish comes to mind) but overall, learn to live with it or buy a sports car.

 

Things to check: TPS, Compression, make sure the distributor is not install a tooth off, valve clearance, firing order, spark plug gap, EGR.

And hook the cat back up

 

How can you be 100% sure though? It could've been screwed up by two different people.

Was the valve lash adjusted properly? If it's too tight it won't run good. Did you have the head machined before putting it back on with the new head gasket?

The distributor could off one or two teeth screwing up the ignition timing. However, using a timing light would reveal if that's the case or not.

 

Hey all, I'm Toychick's sis. The one with the SLOW '94 truck. The CAT was only bypassed momentarily. Its all hooked up now. Thanks for the insight, this is REALLY bothering me. I don't think its just "its a toyota, so its slow" issue. Our mechanic drove it, and said it drives like its running on 38's, and its only on 31's.

Well, you first have to determine if you really have a problem or not. Why do you believe it has no power? Was it like this when you got it or was it more powerful and has lost this power?

A 22RE on 31s with 4.10 gears is slow with a manual and would be more so if it were an automatic. So, do you really have a problem or not?

If you DO have a problem, and it was like that when you got it, you need to make sure its all properly tuned up. You could have low compression due to rings or valves. You could have one or more fuel injectors not fireing right or they could be clogged. Plugs or wires could be a problem. Cam could be worn or many other things the previous owner may have allowed to happen.

If you had good power, then lost it, well the same things still apply, but at least you have a known base line and some history. Hope this is of some help at least.
