4x4 problem

I own a 1995 Tacoma sr5 4x4. V6eng. and auto trans. IN 2 wheel drive there are no problems, but in 4 wheel high or low, the rear axle locks and then frees up, causing a skipping motion? What could be the problem, and what will it take to fix it?

Sounds like the gear ratios are different in the front and rear diffs. Google search how to check gear ratios.

The four wheel drive was fine though, until cold weather set in. it worked all summer in the mud, and the first time i tried to use it in the the snow, thats what happened. Does this mean the gears are not lining up properly?

sounds like u have a problem in the front diff or transfer case. jack the truck up put in 4wd and see if it still does it , if so then look under as the tires are turning and see where it looks like its binding,
