does it do this at the inside switch and outside at the rear door? Or just one or the other?

If it's the famous 2nd gen window I have the factory manual in pdf format, send me an email address and I'll send it to you. It mostly has electical troubleshooting though.

If it is working some of the time the window regulator probably needs lubed. Put the tailgate down, remove the cover and plastic inside. Then you can see the workings. If you click both side locks to locked, 2 clicks, you can move the window up and down with the rear key switch. Just be careful not to go too far up . Clean and lube everything that moves and see if that helps.

If it's a newer runner, sorry don't know much about them.

I attempted to dismantle the back door so i could get in and see how the back window works and give it a lube..huge amounts of rust on the plates that push the window upwards..it's nicely lubed but still intermittent both from the inside switch and the rear door switch..i reckon it may be the motor. i thought it may be the relay but i am sure that if it was it would not work at all..Eric do you reckon you could send me that manual in PDF,thanks alot!oh by the way it is a 2nd gen runner, 1994 V6
