Question 3vze motor opinions wanted

Hello yota-heads!! I Just got a FREE!! 91 extracab 4x4.(from the orignal owner) the body is in great shape and it has only 250,000 miles. this will be a great upgrade from my 93 2wd, 22re truck (180,000 miles). here is the deal: It still runs but the harmonic balancer came loose and messed up the crank.I am wanting to build a dependable daily driver, NOT a souped up 4x4 race truck. The old owner told me that he had the head gaskets replaced with the timing belt but never had anything else done to it. In my researching of this motor Iv discovered that alot of people dont like it 1. What is your opinion\experince with the 3vze ??? 2.Any recomondations on where to buy a good rebuild kit or rebuilt motor? 3.(gearheads only) when rebuilding this motor what upgrades are a must (cam, heads, ect) remember daily driver... thanks

My motor is stock other than the K&N intake. I have 230,000 miles on it (384,000kms) and have never had it leave me stranded. The only work done on it in that time was the head gasket recall, 1 clutch, 1 battery, 1 alternator, i set of shocks. thats it. Very reliable. Not the most power, not the best fuel economy, but will never leave you stranded

Matt

You'll find that most of us who wheel don't do much to the 3.0 cause there's not much you can do as far as power goes.

I like the 3.0...this is my second (well first with a rebuild) and I'm at over 400,000 mi. Iget about 12-15 mpg but that is mostly due to big tires and stock gears. As far as performance I have port and polished heads and intake with O/S Stainless valves and 3 angle valve job, also have K&N intake , breathers on the crankcase ventilation, and NWOR headers and 2.25" exhaust with magnaflow muffler. Rebuild kit get it from engnbldr.com and get his O/S valves, not really any cams available but also do headers and an bored T-body if you've got the money. Good Luck!

I've liked mine enough for the last 15 years that I'm putting a rebuilt one in now that it's only a 5 cylinder. I don't think the power issue is as great with the trucks as it is with the 4Runners (power to weight ratio) . . . . at least when you've got all 6 cylinders!

I love my 3.0. Just wish it had more oomph. I would like to put the 1GRFE in... mmm... 4000 cc's of displacement. (right? approx. 4000?)
