3rd gen Fuel gauge

Anyone know if there is a particular problem with 3rd gen 4runner fuel gauges?

I have a 96 and I was just curious if people have had problems with the gauges or sending units?

Mine likes to read full tank all the time then sometimes it reads right?

Any thoughts?

Mine fluctuates quite a bit. It will read 3/4 tank then full when on an incline or 1/2 if nose down an incline.

TSB EL-010 addresses fuel gauge problems in 1999 and 2000 4runners.

And yes, it sucks when fuel gauges lie. Interestingly enough, the NHTSA made Audi recall their defective gauges siting them as a safety issue. Toyota has yet to do anything about it. I guess Yota is going to have to get a Class action suit filed against them before they voluntarily fix it, and I'll be more than happy to participate.

On this note...anyone had any luck with the stealer fixing this relativey cost free.

I have what the dealer informed me would be the "full manufacturers warranty" through 100K or 6 years.

Under this warranty, they're only willing to fix 1 of 4 parts that need to be replaced per the TSB to the tune of $450+

Some warranty that is.

I bought mine as a 'Certified Used', with one of the certification line items being, "Fuel gauge reads correctly"

When I said I wanted it fixed, the dealer, regional rep, and Toyota National all said, 'screw you' $480 to fix.

Fraud is what I call it.

My dealer fixed everything. At first, they thought only the sender would have to be replaced but then they realized all parts needed to be replaced so they gave me a free loaner car for 1 week while my parts arrived. My guage has been spot on ever since!

Mine was back to the stealer 3 times to get this fixed. They replaced a ton of stuff under the Toyota 3/36 warranty and it's still not right. I gave up on them.

The calibration is Ok but it takes about 1/2 hour before it will read full.
