My dealer just changed their recommended oil change interval from 3500 miles to 5000...on a rig with as many miles as mine, do you think 5000 is too long to go between changes? I use 10W-30 Full Syn. Mobil 1...it seems to last a while...I don't mind spending the $35 or so bucks to buy the oil, and since my dealer usually does the oil change for about 5-7 bucks thats no biggie either.

Pretty much I just wanted to know which interval would be best to prolong the life of my engine...thanks guys!

probably won't hurt much, especially with synthetic. my recommended interval for my '84 was 10,000 miles :o

 

You're changing Mobil 1 every 3500 miles??? Why bother using a synthetic? Even at oil changes at 5,000 miles, a good dino is more than sufficient. If you're changing your synthetic at anything less than 10-12,000 miles (with a filter change somewhere in the middle) you're not breaking even $$ wise. And I've had numerous Toyota engines go well beyond 200,000 miles on dino.

 

Dino on the old 87 I used to have with 250k (original motor) on the ticker every 5-6,000 miles kept it happy. I'd say you're wasting money every 3,500 bro. The oil is all but new at that point still.

 

actually, oil never wears out. it's the detergents and other additives that do, that's why you change it.

 

I was referring to the ability of the oil to keep itself clean and fresh with and maintain its original structure.

 

OK...I'll stick with the 5k interval then.

You might want to read this article, they ran a car with Mobil 1 for 18,000 miles without changing oil, with testing done every 1,000.

Changing every 3,500 miles seems like overkill, but then oil isn't all that expensive so maybe it's worth it.

 

Thank you for posting that link...I've been looking around for that. I've read it before but couldn't find it. Thanks man, yeah..I'll just go with the 5k interval..save me some money so I can get that ARB a little sooner!
