3.4 running like crap

I have a 86 4runner with a 96 3.4L about 150,000km
Buried it in a puddle and it started running really rough. If I let off the gas for more than a few seconds it would stall out. And under load it would bog down.
I kept it going for a while and it was able to idle on its own but very sporadically.
Drained a ton of water out of the tank and changed plugs, wires, and hollowed out cat.
Seemed to be doing good until I took it out wheeling.
Now the rpms won’t get up very high. I don’t have a tach but I’m guessing it’s about 3k unless it’s in 4L then I can get them up. Bogs right done occasionally and it over heated just all of a sudden and started boiling out of the reservoir.
It starts and idles good right now but seems to get rough when it warms up.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm...."buried in a puddle", you say. Did you clear any water that got into the intake and cylinders before re-starting?

I see a lot of red flags in the original posting...

-Engine compartment took on water...

Lots of electrical and mechanical items could be contaminated allowing engine performance issues.

-Water entered the fuel system...

Multiple fuel delivery items damaged and or contaminated...?

-Engine overheated...

Possible internal engine damage...

Codes are p0300 random misfire and a code for every cylinder saying the same.
Water didn't realy get in the intake as I have a snorkel But everything under the hood did get very wet.
It does seem to idle perfect when cold but warm it runs rough and won't rev past 3k in high.. Still revs normally in low

Just took everything off to check timing and it seems to be about 100 degrees off.
What are the chances that this didn't destroy my valves or anything??

3.4 5vz-fe is an non-interference engine so it did not hurt the valve train or pistons.

Can you clarity what you mean by "100 degrees off"?

That sounds wonderful but yes it was 100 degrees off. Is there nothing that would of destroyed?

Get the cams and crank aligned to their TDC marks and put the belt back on. Many threads on the topic around here.

Red face

You mean it will still run with things so far out of time??

Which says to me getting the timing belt any where near close should be just fine !!??

I would hope I missed something

And it still ran? I guess the real question is how did running through the water get the timing off? Are both cams off 100° or just one? Is the belt stripped or otherwise damaged?

The key question is did it hydrolock? The fact that it ran at all says it didn't. But that's the only way I can think of that water would skew the timing by that much. In and of itself, the timing being off will not hurt anything. But whatever force caused that to happen, may indeed have damaged something. So please explain exactly what happened to the belt, if anything, and how you figure 100°...

I would restore timing and then do a compression check. Go from there.

Not familiar with the 3.4, but my 2.7 has spark plug wells. If you have them, water might have gotten in there causing shorts. Pull the wires off, and inspect the wells.
