Unhappy 2003 Rattles

Hey Guys,

I really hope you all could help. I have a variety of rattles in my truck.

I had one in my front passenger side door ( cladding was loose ) and the sunroof rail ( needed grease ) these have been fixed.

There are two that are really driving me crazy.

1st) By the rear passenger door, about where the seat lock is (the one that releases the seat for folding), the seems to be a clanking, like something metal popping. It's been in twice for this. the tech thought it might have been the actual seat lock, so he took the seat apart, removed the lock and put felt all around it so there would be no metal to metal contact. Well the clank is still the and now there is also a squeak from that same area. It seems to only do it when the weight is ditributed tothe right side of the vehicle, like if i dorve over a speed bump and only let the right tires hit it.

2nd) They greased the rails of the sunroof. That sort of stopped the rattle when I close the door. Now there is a rattle that is coming from the headliner. It seems to be right about where the map lights/sunglass holder is located. It only comes on a bumpy road that causes vibration thoughout the truck.

If anyone could please help. Any insight that I could relay to the stealership would be really appreciated.

Actually if there is anything that I could do myself, thats cool too. I'm kinda tired of them getting grease all over interior.

Thank you.

I had the same problem in the rear with the squeek. I took it to the dealer and they fixed the problem.

The problem is a bracket between the sheet metal. It rubs up on the inside of the metal.

The fix. They took the rear right seat out and bent the mounting bracket just enough to not hit or rub.

Hope this helps.

Sorry this reply is of no help....

but I can't hear anything because my windows are down all the time and the radio blasting although during late night drives home, i sometimes hear the rear seating area rattle sometimes... but nothing that'll make me go crazy though.

If it persists and you can't figure it out, try the stealer. (i myself is not fond of them so i'd figure it out myself). could just be some metal to metal contact (usually is) and just have to either bend some parts like what Slib said.

good luck

I had the creaking noice coming from the rear right seat. It sounded like the seat belt clip is hitting the side. But actually I found out it was coming from the lock(striker) that lock the seat. I put some grease around the hook and now the sound is gone. Give it a try.

Look at my avatar.....while putting the seat back into the upright position did you push the seat with enough force to engage/lock the mechanism? I have my rear seats folded down almost always, great storage room, and when I put the seats back up and drive away I sometimes hear a loud clanking over bumps, etc. I found that I had not 'pushed' with enough force to have the mechanism actually lock.

Just thought I'd ask, nyuck, nyuck

I saw a write up on the roof/headliner rattle on this or another board. Turned out to be a wire leading to the courtesy lights.

This is based of course on the assumption you had the seats folded down. I have not encountered any of the issues you stated, so far it has been a great vehicle.

Rattle

You know it doesn't make the noise when the seat is down.

How do you engage the rear seat bottom lock? I asked this on another board and the answer was there is no such thing as the locking seat bottom. Which is contrary to the owner's manual. I really tried slamming and pushing it, all to no avail. The strap seems to just be a mechanism to lift the seat, as I can not see how it there could be any locking mechanism.

The lock is located in the upright cushion. The button you depress at the top of the cushion is attached to a lock halfway down the backside of the seat. Agreed, the lower cushion pulls up with a nylon strap, at least that is to the best of my memory and exploration. My clanking came from not 'slamming' the upright cushion back into the lock. I pushed it hard, but it did not apparently 'snap' into locked position. Now it locks/unlocks easily, must have been a 'new' thing.

Thumbs up Hey Serge-

Could you elborate a bit more on the procedure and the exact location of the metal that they bent for the fix. This way I can relay it to the stealership.

Post Rattle and roll

I have had most of the rattles you refer to and have addressed all except one that neither the dealer or myself could fix.

I would bet that the rear seat rattle is the coming from the the hinges on the lower rear seats. Pull the rear seat bottoms up and you will see the black (flimsy) hinges. Give the seat bottom a little back & forth shake and see what happens. In my case it rattled as if loose, but turned out to be just the metal of the hinge rubbing against the metal bracket it is bolted on to. My solution was to cover all the metal areas with electricians tape and bolt it back. Stopped that rattle.

BTW: When was your Runner built? It sounds so close to the issues in mine I wonder if it was the same batch down the line. Mine was built 4/2003.

Built...

Mine was built in 02/2003. I'm sure that this is part of the problem.

Temporary brain cramp, okay permanent. I read cushion, thought you meant bottom. It does take a little effort to get the backs to lock.

I do think it strange the owners manual talks of the seat bottoms being locked, page 47 and 48! At least I cannot see how they could or do lock.

I had a rear seat rattle problem and it turned out to be the cupholder tray on the center console. If and when the console was in the down position it would rattle like crazy. By leaving it up the rattle has stopped. I will just leave it up so I don't have to go to the dealer..
