The 2001 doesn't have any slides just knobs, looks a little cleaner, is it a possible just plug and play? TIA

The electronic climate control (with the LCD readout) is not at all a plug and play item if thats what you are asking.

i'm pretty sure that it is plug and play for the 99+ runners. not so on the 96-98's for sure. again, i think that it is on the 99+, but not positive.

so, slides & knobs to just the three knobs?

are your slides basically switches, or to they have a mechanical linkage. they should be just switches, and therefore the 01 control unit could be retrofitted. if they are mechanical linkages, you're SOL.

I don't think the vent switch can go from a slide to just a button since there's probably a motor that controls that part.

Ditto....that is also not going to be a plug and play at all.
Messing with the climate control is not as easy as it may seem on these vehicles.

UNR - just for clarification - neither of those are Climate Control. They are basic HVAC controls. Climate Control has a readout and you set the temperature and it maintains it.

The correct answers have been given. It won't work (easily anyway.)

The slide controls have cables.
The rotary controls are all electric.
The wiring and components are entirely different.
You would need most of the system plus the harness to change over.

It's not possible without changing the boxes. The Climate Control setup (digital) uses servos to move the levers in the boxes. The HVAC controls use cables to move the flaps/doors/levers, until 2001 when they went to Servos and Cable combo. Either way, you cannot interchange them without changing the boxes as well.
