You can probably buy the odd ball 2001-2002 brackets from the collision catalog and add them to this older axle or make them yourself.

You'll have to weld the stuff on, but that's not a big deal. I would use your 2001 axles and outter beaings. Since you have a 2001, your not going to be able to just plug in the computer stuff anyway, it will have to be a custom harness.

As someone said, I think Inchworm has the best one.

If you call Toyota Customer Service with the frame VIN and tell them it's a junk yard truck, they should be able to get the rest of the vin and get you an axle code.

From your pics, you can clearly see it has ABS ports, so your good to go. Also that top breather is missing, so the gears probably have crud on them, work that angle with the junker and pretend that the missing breather and exposed hole is really a deal killer. He'll drop the price.

Good angle to run with the missing breather. I will think more on this and then decide on either this undertaking or just opt for a new true track Detroit "soft locker" carrier.

you could always buy it, and sell it on a board ro e-bay, I think if you picked it up at a good price, you could definately turn a few $$ off of it, the carrier with e-locker that it, not the whole axle. Just my .02

That is sort of the way I am leaning on this thing. But then is someone local wanted and easy swap for a 96-2000 they would miss out on the axle. Not really going to go crazy over this thing. The more I think about it with the accident damage the more I think it is a bad idea.

BTW were you able to ship the BL out?

Yes, I shipped it out yesterday at work. I don't have the tracking number handy, I frogot to grab it off of our UPS book, I am back Tuesday weather permitting, so I can grab it then for you, sorry about that. I was looking for an e-locking 3rd locally before, but when I really need a locker, I think I'm gonna go ARB, by the time you get done regearing, and modding the housing, the price is almost the same, plus the e-locker, and the ARb are(from what I can tell) about equally as durable. But, if you do need to re-gear, the E-Locker may be a little less epensive, either way, it is used, so the extra $$$ for the ARB seems like it would be worth it to me. If the swap was easier, I would do, it, but a few guys from TTORA advised me it would be difficult. I am not at the level where I really need a locker yet, so I'm going to save for the ARB if and when I need it. Just my .02. Thanks again,
Jason

No worries about the tracking #. I will just keep an eye out for it at my Postal Annex box.

Absolutely agree with you about this e-locker. More I learn about this swap the more I am leaning towards going another way. I really should have listened to MarP and others about getting a 96-00. I love my Runner and think there are some things about it that I like better than the 96-00's but I am starting to find its limits as far as the modding goes. I always seem to or want to go beyond what I had "planned".

Where was this rig from? thats alot of rust for Cali. I assume its around you? Make sure that rust is only surface and hasnt caused any structural damage to the housing.

I have a '99 sr5 now and i love it. I looked at acouple newer ones when i was shopping and Im glad now that i got the '99 after reading online. I only wish I had gotten it with the e-locker and hood scoop (highlander ed?)

That axle is almost tempting for me, but I dont wheel enough to justify an e-locker add on for the money and I havent been in a situation yet where ive needed one(that may all change when I go to paragon park tomorrow in the snow)

Good luck on the e-locker quest!

If you take your time shopping, and get the deals that are out there, you can do it for $400 or under.

Being from Michigan I was suprised to see how much the west coast salt air rusts things in California. My 2001 has some rust on the suspension but I live literally 1 bolck from the beach. Every night it seems like the marine layer rolls in as a fog and coats everything with salt. Does seem like a lot of rust though. I think this thing was in 4wd when in the accident that totaled it. The t-case is stuckin 4Lo.

The two tubes are very different, 1996-2000 and 2001-2002. Look for yourself and compare the two, you will see.

The axle housing are fully interchangeable, the bracket for the second brake line needs a few holes drilled into the earlier housing, (shown circled in red, in the first attached photo) then simply bolt it on, other than that, ALL the other mounts are exactly the same.

In the second attached photo, you can clearly see an e-brake cable loop on a 2001.

I've measured all the link mounts comparing 1999 to a 2001 and they all are the same.......

Wow Bruce. I thought this thread was dead.

I thought they looked pretty much the same. I did compair them by pulling next to the donor vehicle and giving it a good once over. Steve seemed pretty sure that they were "very" different.

Just not sure if I want to take this on. I have given it a lot of thought and cannot seem to decide what rear locker I want. I have heavily considered just getting a Detroit "soft" TruTrack and being done with it. I know that this rear end is still available.

You are doing hte Tierra Del Sol run correct? We can talk about this some more then. I am interested in your opinions on this.

Thanks for the follow up on this! I sincerely appreciate it and will tell you it is rare.

Hope to see you and the rest of SoCal YT on Fri/Sat/Sun.

Still not sure if I'll be making the run, but I'll try......

I knew the mounts were the same, I measured them a while back, since I plan to build a new 4-link set-up and needed an accurate jig. I have the frame and axle housing from FearToy's old rig. The pictures you posted on that junk yard rig worried me, a bit too rusted up for my taste. Swapping the brake lines is no big deal since you gonna have to bleed them anyways.

Installing an ARB would the easiest, I like being able to control when my rear axle is locked......

You really should make this trip. Sounds like we are going up to the event area but not getting too wrapped up in it. More doing our own thing. YOu gotta check out all my work on my Runner. I have made good progress since you last saw it at Big Bear.

I'd go for it...be a pioneer. Do a write-up as you go.

I'd imagine you'll be able to change parts from your current axle to the donor once its installed to work out the bugs (ABS, VSC, TRAC).

The regear the front when you have the money. Take the gears out of the front of the donor if you dont trust using the entire thing. Then have a shop do the install if your not comfortable doing it yourself, which I dont blame you on that. Thats the only thing I ever have a shop do.....

Go e-locker or go home. We can take some measurements between my e-locked '00 and your '01 next month in DV.
