This is my first post - so I hope I did it right!

I just bought an 87 4Runner and want to upgrade the sound system - but I want the new speakers to remain behind the factory panels. Any ideas on how to get the best sound in the back? Do I just buy the best 6.5" I can, or is there benefits of going with a plate or 6x9?

I know this will limit my low end sound- but I want to be able to take the top off without worrying about stuff getting stolen.I have'nt bought a head unit yet.

I was also thinking of putting additional tweets in the air vents above the 4.5" fronts in the dash?

Any thoughts?

Welcome aboard. Can't help with the sizes, but I used to run tweets in my competition Celica. Worked good, but kind of destroyed the imaging. Better to put speakers in the front kick panels for imaging. Good Luck!

 

If you want to put the speakers in the stock location, then for the fronts you will need size 4T. As for the rears I think 6.5 might be too big from when I tried to install mine. I ended up installing my 6.5"s on the panel by just cutting where the stock grill holes were on the panel. Try checking out crutchfield to see what fits without any modifications.

I put 6x9's in the panel just above the rear seatbelts,6.5 in the front door panels,4" mids in the front factory holes and tweets on the front pillars.This is in an 87'4Runner.

I wanted to keep my system fairly stealthy so I utilised the stock locations. I used the Infinty 4" in the front and 6.5 in the rear. They are all Reference series now since my front Kappas gave up the ghost. Great sound and easy intall since Infinity speakers mount with 4 lugs and are easy to bend to fit.

 

After hitting the local stereo shops this weekend, I have revised my plans... I am sticking with the 4s in the front, but will go with the 6x9's in the back seat cubby holes.

Anyone have hints on the 6x9 install?

I plan on running a high power Panasonic head unit (4x 25W RMS) $299.99, no amp, 4T Rockford Fosgate in the front ($79.99)and 6x9 Rockford Fosgate ($99.99) in the back - All from crutchfield

Any thoughts on a better expenditure of my $$? This meets my criteria - black deck/green lights (blend in) and no obvious external speakers.

I think this will keep me happy - hopefully I can fight the urge to add to it -

Glyn,my 87' didn't have the factory panels so I made some.If the panels feel to flimsy,you could use some plywood as support.You wouldn't have to make a whole panel,just enough to support the weight of the 6x9.I'd also run any wiring along the door sills to keep them away from the heat of the tranny.There's a lot of room behind the panel so it should go pretty easy.good luck,Doug

 

Anybody installed any 5.25" or 6.5" speakers in their doors on the 1st gen? If so post some pics.

Could you send a pic? I've got an 88 and wish to add better speakers. I've got ways to do it but they won't be concealed.
