Hi all. I have a 03 Sport Edition V6 4Runner and was looking into cutting
off the stock resonator and putting in its place an 18 or 22 inch magnaflow tip to go with my 18 inch magnaflow muffler which I had installed 5 months ago. Is this a good idea? I know its going to sound deeper and more throaty. Is it wise to cut off the stock resonator. Has anyone with the new 03+ 4Runners done this to there truck? Any problems encounter? Pros and cons? Thanks

 

Heck yeah, cut it off! Who needs quiet exhaust anyway?

You wont hurt anything. Just be sure to cut it off carefully so you can go back to stock someday.

 

If I do go through with it, I don't plan on going back to stock. By then, I will be looking into a catback sytem. I like the Borla and Jaos but to pricy right now. I'll wait a couple more years for the price to go down and make the change then. But for the mean time, I want a nice clean look and was just worried by eliminating the resonator, I would encounter problems. Any 03 owners out there who has done this mod? Any issues? Thanks

 

I wouldn't worry about any issues. I"ll be removing my resonator next week as mine is all banged up I'm going to remove it from the flang and just reroute the exhaust pipe to the side somehow. Since I offroad alot, I need to move it to a spot where it won't get all banged up.

Go ahead and do the mod as you won't have to worry

No prob! I'll be doing it as soon as the rear bumper is replaced. Most likely it'll be a chop job like look as it's just gonna be a pipe coming out to the side but prob facing down. I don't want it to come out to the side all the way as I want the lowest part to be the bumper so it won't get bashed by the rocks.

I have some ideas and I'll prob be doing the chopping next sat. Pics will come soon!

Lance, If your getting a custom bumper why don't you get them to cut a hole in the side to allow for the exhaust to come out there. Then everything is protected clean looking and you won't have to worry about fumes while off-roading.

 

Austin, Actually I did think about that one but the problem is that the frame sits pretty low on the new 4th gen. Therefore punching a hole in the side will be utterly impossible

Figuring out a diff way though

 

I am having a custom Cat back built next week using a Magnaflow muffler and a straight tail pipe so I will let you know how much difference it makes.

I added a flow master and kept the back rez. Wonder if if would get louder if I removed it? The flow master was a direct replacement - just had the stock one cut out and the FM put in. Less than $100 mod and it sounds great.
