The 01-02's should have an A340F with Auto, V6 and 4WD
actually, my 99 limited with the Multi-Mode Transfer Case has a center, Lockable differential.

the Multi-Mode system is best described as a full-time AWD system with the capability to run in 2WD mode and full 4WD mode.

Multi-Mode started with the 98's I think, or maybe it was the 99's... anyway, it was only on the Limited's at first, then in 2001, all of them got it.

Yeah.
When I was in the market for a 4Runner I had noticed some of the 99' having the push button option.
I think I had even seen some of the 98', but I am not 100% sure.
But I just settled for the 97' regular lever, and glad I did, I feel more reassured with the lever then with a push button....
But thats just me....

Did you guys think this center diff contributed to the break down of this tranny?

No. According to IPT, the 2001-2002 A340F in our 4runners have an inherently weak OD planetary gear.

that 4WD button on the side of the stick is actually for AWD mode with an open center diff. that's what you want to use when on the road in icy/wet conditions. when you go offroad, you want to use the stick to move it to 4HI (locked center diff) and when it gets bad, then you go to 4LO (also keeps the center diff locked - and then lock the rear diff if needed).

just read up on the system in the owner's manual if you have any questions.
