She ended up having toyota do a new tranny with a warranty for about $4k too.

I have a 99 with 109k on it, and still runnin strong!! (Knock on wood...)

BTW its not new..Its a rebuilt unit from mexico. Just talk to the parts guy at the dealership.

Stepdad has already given the okay unfortunetly....
But if the problem happens again (praying that it dosen't) I will def put into conversation IPT.

I am still wondering if my '97 is going to go the same way.
I have done some extreme off-roading and towing, including a friends jeep every time he borke down (Toyota to save teh day!!!)
So should I go get it checked out at a place that ffers a free check?
I am due to get the fluid changed soon, maybe I should get teh tranny flushed?
I am trying to avoid it as much as I can in mine.
I have even been shifting into netural at stoplights to do what ever I can.
Any tips would be good.
Thanks

No need to be paranoid about catastrophic tranny failure on these.....as people mentioned it is quite rare (most of the time when they go, it is from people burning through the clutch packs with a S/C'd motor). Just do your regular maintenance on it (fluid flush, change/clean filter screen, etc) and install a tranny cooler to increase the life expectancy by reducing tranny temps. There should be no reason you can't go 200k+ miles on your tranny without a rebuild under normal driving conditions.

And to add to what Jamie just said and answer your question mixed in to the posts above, you need something called a Valve Body upgrade if you want to start pushing lots of power. Search "VB upgrade" or "Valve Body Upgrade" for a ton of info. There are also a ton of threads on all the mods needed to supercharge properly.

Update!!!
Got the Runner back and runs just like the day we got it or even when it hit 100K....
It has a 12k warranty on it so we shall see...
But for $3700, it better last another 200k
Thank you all for your input!!!

He blew the overdrive.
How the hell he did that I don't know...
I can't find the list of what was replaced but still $3700 later I am sure it was extensive.
So yeah thats the jist of it, a blown overdrive.

At times on the way home from work I wish I had an auto, after hearing things like this the 5 spd is just fine.
Lets hope the auto stays together now.

I honestly don't know.
As soon as I can get the manifest I will get back to everyone on this.
That does sound like one of the things replaced, but again, not a 100% sure.

Not to hijack, but I am curious now. Are you all saying that in 01 and 02 Toyota used 2 different autos, an A340F and an A340H. So do the problems seem to be exclusive to the A340H, and if someone has one what do people mean when they say it shares fluid w/ the transfer case? Do you only fill the tranny and the xfer case is attached and recieves fluid as well? I am asking as I have an 02 Sport, not worried about my tranny at all, but I would like to know what the deal is, I just looked at my door sticker and it clearly states A340F, and in the owners manual for my 02 it says nothing about the tranny and transfer sharing fluid, the tranny calls for ATF and the transfer calls for 75/90 GL4 or 5 and has it's own fill and drain. Anyone know the truth about all this?

That was the old A340H that shares fluid with t-case (like pre 95).

This is all making less and less sense to me. Someone told him to verify he had the A340F and not the A340H, that person has an 01 from their sig, so I now will assume no 3rd gen ever came w/ an A340H, just the pre 3rd gen. So no 3rd gen shares fluid between the transfer and tranny. Now assuming the center diff is part of the transfer case, which it would have to be to allow slippage between the front and rear axles, how is the tranny in the 01 and 02 different from the tranny in a non full time 4wd 3rd gen, did they simply change the O/D, and make it weaker to boot, doesn't add up to me.

The trannys in 96-00 don't have any center diff, while the 01-02's do.
The 01-02's should have an A340F with Auto, V6 and 4WD

It was me. I only referred to the A340H because it was in the downloadable shop manual for the 2001. Maybe the manuals cover a large series of years. I only have experience with my model.

Apparantly there are several different versions of the A340H, or else the A340H name is still being used when it shouldn't be. I know my 2001 Tacoma auto tranny is called a A340F in the FSM but on the tranny the tag says Model 30-40LE. And the 2001 Tacoma FSM doesn't have a 30-40LE in it, so something is wrong there. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was just the name that was wrong but my FSM doesn't show the correct valve body for my tranny.

Well until mine blows up I guess I'll have to just not think about it. Why can't it be simple like my 00 Runner w/ the W59, get a 4 cylinder manual and you get the W59.
