01 tcase actuator

4wd has not worked in about a year, really want to do some beach drivin so i figured i try to figure something out. Tried to pull tcase actuator but it wont budge. It will rotate a little but itried to pry it and hammer a little. Does the whole assembly come out or are you supposed to take it apart in place?

pretty sure my instructor said you have to take apart the tcase to get it out today. Im in a automotive program for toyota technicians, and am taking a manual transmission, transaxle, and drivetrains course. be sure you disconnect the battery as the actuator can still be activated even with the key in the off position. i can give ya a definite answer next week, because thats exactly what we're going to do; replace actuators.

Got the tcase actuator to operate manually. Now it is stuck in awd mode. Front driveshaft and cv shafts are turning with rear drive shaft. Cannot get center diff to lock in. Checked both switches on actuator both are good. Does the tcase actuator lock in center diff also? I hate this 4wd system. Friend of mine has similar 4runner and is a very good mechanic he has same problem, worked on it awhile and gave up.

This 4wd system also has a center diff so you can either have awd (1 of 4 tires spinning front and rear center diff unlocked) or 4wd (2 of 4 tires spinning front and rear center diff locked)
