I am jumping around from one project to another, but what I am doing is working on a few things on my lunch break at work and then working on my EFI converison when I am home. Trying to take advantage of the time I have got.

Today it is cold here and we have frost on the ground. I wanted to try a couple of Bubba fixes ( Redneck Engineering) and with the tranny being in the shop and being cold, I took my bearing and stuck it in the oven at about 180 degrees for 30 minutes.

I put a little grease around the shaft of the tranny to let it get cold as well and hoping with the 32ish degree tranny temp and the 180ish bearing temp that the 150 degree difference might make sliding the bearing on the shaft a little easier.

While the bearing was heating up and to distribute force evenly against the bearing, I took a Power Steering Pulley and removed the bearing from inside as I could not find any washers around here that would work.

Then I sacrificed a good grease gun as I have a couple of more laying around that would fit over the shaft and on to the PS pulley.

Then I put the heated bearing over the shaft, sit the PS pulley on top of the bearing, put the grease gun pipe on top of the bearing and a few good whacks, I nearly got the bearing onto the shaft.

Was a great idea until the shaft got to big to fit thru the PS pulley. I will later on take the PS pulley and cut the center out some more for future fixes. The bearing went on almost all of the way until the PS Pulley bottomed out.

Here you can see I just needed a fuzz more to get the bearing to be fully seated to install the C-Clip.

It isnt going to warm up for a few more hours so I might start the 22r to 22re conversion thread later on today.

I dont have any intentions of installing the bearing by hitting with a hammer, but it was to get an idea of what I might could come up with about getting it back on. The Power Steering Pulley and a metal pipe could be used in a press. Sometimes just have to let Bubba do some experiments to make things happen.lol

On warmer days I would get a rag wet and throw it in the freezer and then wrap it around the tranny shaft to get the same results of having a cold day.

I did start a thread called the 22r to 22re conversion>> https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...4-88-a-278925/

Got quite a bit done on the conversion. Up to the Intake is permantly done. The rest is just sitting on there to keep it all together and to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Doesnt look like much but did get quite a bit done. I still need to fix the Injector Harness to get going on the conversion. Should of worked on it when I had the time. Doh!!! I went to install the injectors and went to the parts store and they wont have any in until tomorrow so I went about as far as I could on the conversion.

Finally decided to work on my brake booster issue on my runner and I got a booster with the master cylinder on it. I went and just swapped the whole assembly out and now I cant get any pressure on my brakes. Hoping I can just put my old master cylinder on my new to me booster and be back in business again.

The friend that is going to help swap out Mistys clutch stopped by and we are going to change her clutch Saturday morning. He says with his lift and tranny jack, that we should be done with it quick. I could do it myself but getting it done quick is better in my book. We are quick when we work on a project together. The down side is when you have to work by yourself on the same project, it is like you are in slow motion.

I think he liked my tranny bearing idea. Something he hadnt really thought of. I am planning on doing the tranny bearing swap on a good tranny at his shop as well. He has a press and seems to think we could get it accomplished.

Several steps forward and one small step back. ( Brake issue)

Somethings going good, some not so good. Part store ordered wrong injector seal kit, but will be in by one oclock. Got the brakes working on my 86 runner. I have always had the toughtest of times on getting the air out of brakes on Toyotas. Never had any problems with any other car. I will bleed them again later and get them back to normal.

I called http://connectorsfast.net/shop/index...&product_id=50 and Alex is a very helpful guy. He says the injector connectors are an EV1. In the picture in the link it has a different style clip but he says is the same. I ordered one and will see how it works. He say is a better design.

Should be a 85-87 style connector. He does have on his home page the connectors for 88 and up.

if your gona have to do brake bleeding alone ya might want to invest in a vacuum system so you dont have to pump the brakes

Hello Jason.. It felt good to get out in the shop. I had 3 good days out there. Doesn't really look like it but did get quite a bit done.

Hello Mark.. I see you are online now. I can take a call now if you like. There is no telling when I will be up. Call anytime. I work midnight shift so there is no normal waking hours for me. When I am awake I have my phone on, if sleeping I have it muted so anytime will work.

Hello 4Runnerlily...Welcome to Yotatech. I think you are going to like it here. Lots of information and How To's on getting your runner going. Just a slow steady pace and you will get it done. Everyone wants it all done in a day and miss out on the process of getting it done. Start a build thread and you will enjoy going back at it one day and seeing where you have been and where you are at.

Hello cyberhorn...One of these days I do need to get one of them. Toyota brakes are a pain to bleed. Never have much problems on other trucks like I have these. It isn't just mine that I have this problem with.

Looks like your moving along nicely, i like the fact your not scared to tear apart the tranny. If you could get good at rebuilding them you could make a killing on rebuilds. I have 4 or 5???that need rebuilt.

Cold here too...i split some more firewood and loaded my runner up to take to the garage to hopefully get some progress on my front axle.

Hello kornhuskerwizard...We get some warm days and I really have been enjoying getting out of the house. It has been nice. Today and tomorrow is worse, it gets cold, but we gradually start warming up. I keep hoping this is the last of it.

Just the little bit I have done on the tranny and then looking thru my FSM really has given me some confidence in tackling a transmission. A press is moving up the priority list fast. I think it would be a fun challenge in rebuilding one. I plan on doing the Main Bearing on a spare tranny that I have this weekend. I want to get it in the best possible condition as I can.

I am trying to get all of my other projects wrapped up so that I can focus on my 85 truck this summer. I have a goal of getting it completely done by September for next years calendar. If this weather will let up, I really think I can. My shop is more insulated then it was last summer, so I am hoping that will make a big difference in the amount of time I can spend out there this year. Last year was just to hot and one of the slowest years I have had in a while.

Wednesday thru Saturday I did get an unbelievable amount of time out there and it is the small things that get you time wise but that is the way that it goes, a lot of small steps and then a big step comes. That is always nice.

I am taking 3 harnesses to make one for the EFI conversion. Here is a problem I see a lot. Most people seem to have a hard time getting the 85-87 injector connector off of the injector. The wire clip is type is not the best but I use a small nail and lift one corner of the wire off of the connector to free it. Then it is easily worked around.

I ordered one EV1 style connector from connectorfast.com and it appears to be a great replacement for the 85-87 injectors. I am going to test it on this conversion and if it works great I will replace all of them with it. Alex, the guy that sells them is very helpful and great to deal with. The connectors are $6 a piece with a $10 shipping. Well worth replacing with if this one works out like I think it will. Also it is easier to remove then the current connector.

This is quite typical of what you will see when these are busted up. You can also see where I worked on another connector (TPS, If I remember right), I replaced it and soldered, heat shrinked, and will wrap with electrical tape when I get everything completed on the harness. I am missing a plug and will have to look on my runner to see which one it is and see if I can find one thru connector fast or the boneyard.

The squeeze tab on the side that will make removing the connector easier.

I did get the combo switch replaced. The parts truck had the same part number as this one which was cut by the PO. My guess is the wiper switch quit working and they did a bang up job of just replacing the switch. They just had the wire wrapped up and no insulation at all. The part number can not be seen with out taking it off of the column. There are several part numbers when changing these out, just to make you aware of them.

I agree on the older 85 style connectors. They can be tricky to get off. I also use a small screwdriver or sometimes the tip of a knife, but every once in a while a clip goes flying. haha Then the search for it is on.

I wish I knew how to tear down and rebuild those trannys. I also have one that needs gone through.

I have always been intimidated by tearing a tranny apart and trying to fix it. I will say just taking it apart and removing the gear and then studying the FSM that it took alot of the fear out of it. This may be baby steps for some but was a huge confidence builder in that I might could possibly do something like that.

A friend may have a lead on a press for me. It would be awhile before I would attempt a complete rebuild but I have several transmissions and would like to combine the parts off of the bad ones into a good one and see what I wind up with. I have learned a ton from old bad parts and making one good part out of two or three.

I removed some more wiring and several bad plugs and think I now have the main harness in good shape and have some confidence in the injector harness. I will keep an eye out for a better injector harness.

If all goes well sometime between now and Friday I am shooting for firing this truck up. I still have to install the injector harness, fuel tank system, and the rest of the dash. Still a ways to go but a few good days work and it could happen. While having the main dash out, I noticed it was brown. This truck has not had interior work but looks as if it came from the factory that way and the factory used interior paint. It was not completely covered like if I had used interior paint. I will have to look at another main dash support to confirm my suspicions.

Main Dash Support got a good bath.

Lots of great headway! You sure do know how to keep moving along.

My family used to have an 86 or 87 standard cab a while back with the 22R. It was a great truck, first manual I learned to drive. Just never did have enough power! Keep up the good work with the 22RE.

Wow Terry it looks like you're burning the mid night candle working on things. I thought about those EV1 connectors my self its always a pain to slip them off. I use those HF picks with a slight been to remove them can't beat that since they were $1.00 for the cheap set. Only problems is if you aren't careful those clips tend to sling shoot across the room and you can loose them. I did that because I was too confident using those picks. Luckily I was able to find it. Now I am careful to make sure that doesn't happen again. I looked into that EV1 early last year and found them on ebay. I think you can get a set of 6 of the EV1 for something like 24.99 shipped.

I really want to find the connector for the TPS like you, I broke a piece off mine off(brittle plastic) when I tried pulling off a few thousand time way back. i found out that a company in Australia carries it, but the cost of shipping was high part number was RT142 and it was listed for the Hilux with 2.4L 22re.

Hello chuckarhunt...I miss the V8 days when there was plenty of power. I have an 85 extra cab as well that I plan on getting to soon. These little 22re's do alright for power, and I have seen one or two that can get up and go enough for me. One step at a time eventually gets it done.

Hello junk4u..I seen a site for the TPS connector fairly recently and now that I am trying to find it, I just cant seem to. I am missing a few clips, but at I have some good connectors now. Luckily I had one on a parts harness. Not much of it left now but it has fixed a few harnesses. I just cant seem to find a good one and if I do find one I will grab on to them. Planning on going to the boneyards on Friday if all works out. If the weather holds out, I have plenty to do, should get several things done this year. Hope to make up for the last year when I didn't get nearly as much done as I would of liked.

Hello cyberhorn... I have done it a time or two and when I am in the boneyards and I come across a truck, I strip it down for practice and to keep some other goof butt from destroying a hundred dollars of parts for a fifty cent part. Seen that to many times and keeps it fresh in my mind. I still get to put the 85 back together as well. It is in about this same shape.

Been driving my 86 and seeing the crack in the dash is just bugging me especially when I have a good spare. I pulled it out and gave it a good cleaning. I need to pick up some more interior paint and it wont take long to get it painted and in my runner. The one that is in my runner will go on my 85. I move the parts from Mistys runner to mine and on over to the 85. Eventually the 85 will have good parts in it, but it is a far improvement from what it had in the past. I will get back on with the fiberglass dash pads later on. Those are just to learn on and when I cant seem to go any further on a project for a while.

The vent is cracked on this one so I am using it for testing purposes. I am removing the smaller inner tab and seeing if that will make it easier to remove from the dash.

My brother has a place that they recycle some things were he works at. He asked if I wanted some tools that were thrown away. This angle grinder didn't work. I have learned to check the obvious and simplest things first. I could tell the power cord had been cut. I removed the tape and the wires were just taped together. I soldered them the correct way and the Craftsman grinder works great. It is one of the powerful ones that will get you if you don't have full control on it.

Got a Skill saw and it seems to work great. He also gave me a full Makita set that appears to just need some batteries. I will look for one of them and see how the set works out.
