Here's a link from a guy who's been chiming in on my thread. He was answering another guy with your problem......

I know that others have had this issue and replaced both with no success.... Not trying to bring hopes high, ....but at this point, WTH will it hurt, eh? lol.

You don't seem to have the COR problem, but it's good to know if you guys need to bypass it to test things out.
Hope those help, I will fish for the others I read this morning.

My bet is it's gonna be fuel. Not to long ago I had an issue where I was getting good fuel pressure but my relay went bad so the injectors were not working.
Make sure the relays are not getting hot after it cranks over a few times.
It could be and hopefully(for your sake) is something as simple as that.

When running some tests yesterday (lots of tests) I did notice that this Relay that is located on the drivers side kick panel was HOT! we did a test with the meter and it checked out but I am going to grab one today.
Gosh this would make my year if it was something that simple.
Stay tuned!

I'm really getting busy as I've gotten a lil behind, ...I LOVE THAT CATCHUP STUFF! hahaha. Seriously, I do... makes time fly by. Anyway, I probably wont be able to stop by again until Saturday, maybe, and then next week I'm starting my truck on Friday Night after work(CAM SWAP:/) so I could come by next week, up until Friday. You shouldn't have an issue with either of those 'swap' outs on the Resistor and M4... Just BE SURE to pull the ground when doing these things and then, let me know if you need help for an hour or so, this Friday between 12:30 and 2:30.. I will have that window if you need me.
Best wishes, Robert, ...

Hope your shoot goes well.... also hope to hear what's up, if anything arises. I can go by and help him at a couple times during the next few days... Let me know.
PS> Just a personal opinion... take it or leave it, lol... I would probably do a compression test really quick before firing it over and running it for 20-30 minutes, ...just after talking to TED and TOD, ya know? If you have time, give me a call and I'll explain precisely what you would be looking for, etc.
See ya,

Hey man.... I'm anxious... any news? hahaha. I have tomorrow and Monday free if you need help... just found out. Not all day, either day....but at least a couple hours each. Only doing dinners those days.
BTW, I decided, PRETTY MUCH, that I like the idea of what you're doing on the IFS stuff, ....sounds way more practical for my applications. Let me know what TO DOOOOOOOO, haha. What I mean is, "what can I be looking for? I could jack a Cart from this guy who always walks around Lomita with lots of nice metal pipe!
hahaha. A friend told me he could maybe help out on whatever we have to do to mine, etc., ya know? So, just let me know when would be good and I'M DOWN, homie!
PS> if you can't be over there, Sat. or Monday, let me know if 'J' needs me to just lend a hand on something... glad to help.
L8r brudda, Be safe out there in BIKERLAND!! lol...

Let me add my two cents on my own experience with my 86 4Runner. It was running fine one after noon, and then nothing, it wouldn`t start, checked the fuel pump and all that and still nothing. If i sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body, put the intake pipe back on and try and start it, it would start for a few seconds and then quit. I had a few spare parts laying around that i tried but still not starting. I had a spare solenoid resistor that i hadn`t tried yet, so i figured why not give it a try, nothing else has worked, and after i swapped in the spare it started on the first try. I read that you have tested the solenoid resistor on your truck and it tested good, but some times a part can test good but be bad, so if you can find one to swap in and try you may get lucky like i did. One other thing, have you checked the core relay behind the passenger side kick panel, sometimes those relays go bad and that will also keep your truck from starting.

Again, I think that the mechanic who has it at his shop was going to get an M4 and try it out, then, I guess, the resistor... we'all wont know until Rob fills in the ______ . lol. He's gotta totally focus on this work he's doing, from what he told me.... so I'm sure it might be a couple-sumpn days.
Thanks for the input... your post was actually one of the first I found on Google, Myyota! hahahah.

We tried the M4 relay and... nothing.
Resistor is next.
I guess some good things are that the transmission is together and functional, and the exhaust is going to be done today.
I have an Automotive wire specialist coming today to go through and run his tests. He knows were we are at with this thing now and wants to run some of his own tests.
He also believes that it is something to do with the EFI system. Relay, resistor, switch, ground, or short...

Rob! How are you, sir? Ok, well, best wishes with the 'wiring specialist', ....that's a good guy to have looking into things!
Also great to hear on the Tranny..... Got your email, ...hmmmmm, lol. Anyway, IT'S WORKING, good enough! Also good to hear on the exhaust!
Don't worry, these guys are GREAT at finding issues by tracking back through wiring diagrams, etc., etc., AHHHH, my head hurts just thinking about it! lol.
Can't wait, ...if you could, let me know when you get it started, I'd love to drop by and hear her purr!
PS> Is the 4wd shifter back in? If so, did the light go away? That had me curious.
Just out of curiosity.... Maybe you could run the vin through the dealer and find out if it was an Auto, etc. I doubt it, and the ECU seems to definitely be a 5spd ECU... but just curious what you come up with through the dealer.
Anyway, BEST WISHES, Robert.... It was a lotta fun working with ya(most often, 'VROOOOOOM' HAHAHA) and even better having met ya. Say hi to everyone for me, and say "Smashmouth" to 'J' for me, ...see what he says! hahaha.

Allll Right, so after a few weeks now of trying to trouble shoot this "issue" I have given in and I am having it towed tomorrow to Japanese Auto specialists in Torrance. They will receive the 4-runner in the AM. I will be there to give them the low down and were we are at.
We replaced the resistor, circuit relay, and ignition switch and still nothing. booooooooooo
Stay tuned as once the issues is found I will be sure to post what it was. I am going to have a hard time sleeping... I know it has to be something stupid..

So the dram that is the motor has come to a close.
The fine guys at Japanese Auto Center in Torrance CA had the 4-runner for 3 hours and were able to diagnose the issue.
The issue was the wiring harness. Specifically the loom between the ECU and the ignition coil. The loom was bad or had a short. So I rewired and soldered a direct line to bypass the one in the harness and now she fires up first crank!!
Broke in the motor last night and I have a few small leaks I am going to track down today then off to the muffler shop to have the exhaust done.
I cant wait to drive this thing it has been such a hassle up to this point but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
NEXT IS SUSPENSION AND BUMPERS!!! WOOT!!

Yeah I was super stoked yesterday to break in the motor. Runs a tad rough..
I still need to move the Distributor 180 degrees and then get the timing just right. Fixed one small leak already (bad hose clamp) now just need to pressurize the cooling system and see where the other small leak is coming from.
Looks like the oil pan is leaking too so I will have to pull that and see what is up. Then I have to tack up the exhaust and drive her to the muffler shop for a new exhaust system.
Next week collecting parts and sending parts out to be powder coated. So Pumped to get the fun part started now!

Excellent, Rob! So glad that Tom sussed it up for ya quick..... Told ya, he's a TRUE GURU! HAHAHA!
Was a lot of fun trying to snug her up with ya.... and most of all, I'm glad I met a new friend in ya.
Hope you enjoy the ride and can't wait to do a Caravan up to the Crest or something with the Runners.
L8r t8r,

PS> If you don't have a personal Exhaust shop, I really was pleased with Supreme Muffler in Lomita.... The guys were Quick!....and they did more than they'd quoted me for,...nothing extra. In other words, ...they were really honest and QUALITY work.

Chef,
Thank you man, I would have been over it if I had tried to "drive" it in the condition it was in. It was so rewarding to hear Tom say that "Looks like everything was done the right way, I am sure it is something simple." AND IT WAS!! w00t.
Been on the road now for a few days, runs a tad rough at times I am going to go through and do the timing tonight with a timing light and that should be the issue. Have not had time with work and all to do that.
Also a very small drip leak of oil still so I have to track that down. Going to pressure wash down the bottom of the motor tonight and see what that could be.
Lots of work the next few weeks that is a good thing! So the suspension will have to take a little longer then expected. However I am still on pace to have everything but the paint done before the end of the year.
Can not wait to get a caravan up to the crest. I have never been up there..

It RUNS!!!
Well the 4runner has been on the highway for the last few days and running like a DOG. It felt like it was running at half power and "choked" out.
So we put the rig on the dyno today and found out that it was running very rich. We retarded the timing on the dizzy and we were able to increase hp by 40%. It was getting 90Hp to the wheels and 147fp of torque.
So since it was still running rich we decided that the timing on the cam must have been off a bit. After pulling that apart and a few hard hours of work we were able to get it to run PERFECT!!! getting about 109HP to the wheels now and running like a top. the engnblrdr head and .261 cam gives the motor loads of torque on the bottom thorough about 4500 RPM. so pummped!

WOO HOOO~! Right on, Rob! Great to hear.... I knew Tom would surprise you with his mind melting Guru-22re skills and intuition, hahaha. YES, the Crest sounds great, and ANY time on that, bud.... it's 1hour, max, from my door, to some good wheeling.....bout the same for you, actually. Let me know...
PS> HEY J! lol..... saw him in that shot up there, lol. Tell him Hi from me.
Enjoy, Rob.... and let me know, whatever's clever on the suspension guy... I'd love to at least learn some stuff from him, ya know? Talk to ya soon,
Mark

For sure Mark! Actually I might be installing some of the stuff at J's shop. My fab guy is a bit slammed with the Baja 1k right around the corner sooooo we will see. Most of it is plug and play and should only take about a week. But I really wanna take my time and go through everything. Clean paint, replace, inspect, and replace...
Might head down to the shop Friday for the day and start going through all the suspension stuff I have. Getting a list of what I have left to get, and cleaning and painting everything.
Once I have all the front arms on, and the hubs, brakes and front IFS rebuilt I will take it up to Kurts and we will build the steering, and front and rear shock mounts.
Oh and need to take the rear leafs to Deaver and have them re-arched and a pre-runner pack built...
Have to go and try and track down an exhaust leak now..
