Rob2thec's 1995 4Runner Build-Up Thread

This is pretty sick. I've wondered about doing mid-travel on this gen truck with a uniball upper, on Dezert Rangers they just said it won't work and to drop 4K on Total Chaos.
Rob2thec would you ever consider making a second set of those uppers?

Yea, kind of a toss up I guess. I like the added width, but I was just thinking of doing the uniball UCA like you have and then welding on a shock hoop like the TC style ones for a resi shock. I was even thinking of doing the TC lower uniball conversion on the stock arms too. I still gotta work it out and price it cause if doing a bunch of small mods ends up costing the same I might as well go with Nate's kit. I just really like the though of cheaper mid-travel setups.

I have the motor all torn down right now. Have to pull the transmission and oil pan tonight to get them cleaned up and have the flywheel surfaced.
I will have some pix after the weekend. Rain today so sort of on hold. (no garage) LOL
But should be back to good running oder soon enough. Then on to the suspension!!! w00t

Nice man, I got my tranny pulled, swapping to one that has 3rd gear. Also put in a new clutch so I am stoked to get it driving again and start working on the things I want to work on not the ones I need to work on haha.

Updates...
Ok so it has been over a month and we are STILL working on the motor. It appears that the motor in this 1987 4-runner is NOT an 1987 motor. The timing chain guides were all wrong and so were the water pump and oil pump. So after countless trial and error, trips to the parts shop, and bloodies knuckles we have it (for the most part) back together.
Getting started

torn down

Bastard oil pan

Who needs both bolts for the motor mount? Just a precaution right? LOL

A little durty huh?

So as of now the only issues we have are the leaking oil pan, and the fact that this might be an 1983 carb motor with an 1987 EFI system on it. None of the vacuum lines seem to be matching up correctly, and the its running rough.
More to come...

More updates...
Well After getting everything together, re-doing the oil pan for a 3rd time and another trip to the junk yard for a rusted out radiator hose. More failure...
The good:
Some new rims and tires all painted up:

The bad:
rusted radiator hose

Replacement

So after we put in two solid days of work trying to get it all back together she runs... Rough. I drive her home the 32 miles from my buddies shop. about half way I start pluming white smoke from the motor compartment. Limp it home to find out that the dip stick has blown itself out and is shooting oil all over the motor compartment. Sweet...
We did a leak down test, not a compression test and everything came back positive. Well apparently the rings are bad. IDK at this point. We have done up to our mechanical abilities. In addition to the oil all over, coolant is also leaking.
Left a nice puddle in my apartment parking lot.
So today, I sacked up had it towed to So Cal mini trucks in Claire Monte CA. They build great motors and have been helping tons along the way thus far. They are going to see what we did wrong and I hope that it is not the motor.

Beside that there are a few things that the PO did to this thing that puzzle me.
WTF:

And WTF>>>F!?

Anyone have a part number for the new wiring for the battery and the fuse box terminal that the PO chopped all to hell?
Also were does the gold can mount? It was just floating there? I mounted it to an open space under the manifold but not sure it was supposed to be there. Pics would be great.
More to come...

Holy crap man sorry to hear about all that going south on yall! To me, that god can is fuel filter and if i remember right, it mounts somewhere behind the engine, but im sure itll be okay where it is as long as none of the lines are clogged or kinked in any way. Dont hold me to that though, i have a 3.0 and they are quite different haha

It mounts just above the starter.

WOO HOO! Christmas Eve? ...... Was it more like Christmas Eve at 30?..when you have to put everything together, and the parts aren't all there, and the instructions are in Tagalog? hahahahaha! Actually, that's a lot of fun to me, the 'finding the right stuff and making it work', ya know?
See ya again, soon, brudda,
