Great pictures buddy! So glad you got out there! A stock birf explodeded? I've been pretty hard on Ruby and the multiple personalities Susie Q a silverback , lol..... Never had a problem up for it but I am running dirty dirty dirty dirtyyyyyy thirties..... hahaha. Sorry, whatever I say dirty I always think of that the church lady. Lol.... As we push them further and further, I'm sure something will explode. Did you see any of the pictures at bullfrog trail? So fun!

thanks guys, it was a blast.
I'll be moving up to the RCV axle shafts shortly to remedy the axle breakage issue. I have dirty 30s in the full-float rear.
Chef,
I skimmed thru you pics, really great stuff. I am jealous of the huge spaces you west-coasters have and the sheer size of the boulders. looks like a blast.
Two more trips planned for the summer. I'm hopeful to make a trip to Colorado with a friend in September, but depends on $$ and the shape of the 3.slo.

Hey RBx. There is a guy with a 3rd gen on t4r.org that just did an SAS and has been having a hell of a time trying to figure out what is causing his death wobble. I have really enjoyed both his build and yours and thought maybe you might be able to offer some insight after just going through a similar conversion.
Here's his thread:

I'll read through his thread and see if I see anything glaring, I'm no expert.

had to go back and look at your trail shots..pretty cool.
like you said it was bound to happen blowing a birf.
I am happy that I went with a set of dirty 30's. they seem to be holding up well.
that rock field you wheeled on looks like it would be fun

Robb,
IT was a blast, pics never do the trail justice.
The birf was the only thing not upgraded on the front end...$$ at the time. I'll be ordering a set of the RCV axle shafts shortly, those or dirty 30s should remedy the problem.
The next question would be to upgrade the hub gears, but I have read that the weak point of the drive-train then moves to the ring and pinion, I'd rather carry a set of stock hub gears in my pocket in case i break them on the trail. Better then a R&P. Still researching though.

i have heard the same thing. I blew a rear third on my old 84 twice..i would much rather use the hub gear as the fuse in the drive train than the R&P.
Hub gears are cheap, blow a third and you could be looking at it being both a PITA to get off the trail and a $500+++ hit to the wallet.

It's time for the 26yr flimsy stamped sheet-metal bumper the 4Runner came with to go. The new bumper has been assembled into three main pieces and about 90% of all the gussets tacked in place. I'm trying to weld as much of the assembly together on the vehicle to keep fitment in check.
Hoping to have it finished up this weekend. (Reality math...hope to get done ÷ unforeseen fab issues² x family attention/responsibilities = √what I actually accomplish)
