Yeah, I've browsed on TDI club too and have a nice collection of threads bookmarked. Still waiting to see one done with an auto, though. I know I won't be able to start anything like that for a few years, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your swap whenever it happens!

Hehe, engine swap pyramid scheme. Let's start a scam spam attack!

the auto will be interesting, because the A/T ECT measures RPM and throttle usage as a modified sliding shift point map if you will. There are no vacuum lines on the transmission, so it would be interesting to see how you would fool the computer into thinking it was revving higher since a 1.9TDI wants to cruise at 65mph hovering around the 1800rpm range.
This is another reason i swapped in a 5spd, guys are reporting average 30mpg mixed driving...that's almost 500miles a tank!

you need a bigger tank. i gots a 19.2 gal, and get almost 400 to a tank. at 30mpg, i'd get 550+

1.9? I've just been waiting here for a good thread on that, here.

I liked Big Mikes write up on the 3RZ swap.... If I stayed with a 4cyl that would probably be the lil beast I'd want. But this diesel swap stuff is GREAT! Mileage and power, yeeehaww! lol. Oh, but Truckman did do a Mercedes Turbo Diesel and is getting around 32mpg and has TONS of power! I'd love to drive in that thing just to feel it out!

yup. 19.1 useable, though. (i ran out of gas once)

now that you have your new bumper, you could look into adding an aux fuel tank

I'd consider the Mercedes greaser but it is rather large compare the the tiny TDIs and there is a huge tuner base for the TDI for plenty of reference. My bro is following a thread to drop one in a Disco, which has a bit more weight on our smaller yotas. A guy on the TDIclub forum put one in his taco, I believe using the atomic adapter.
The numbers all seem to be there, torque and hp, if tuned using the donor vehicles ecu.
We will see, I have a ton of reading to do.

Ian, I have a 17.2 gal tank, pretty sure, and plan to use the spare area for an under floor box storage. But it's just a concept right now. I have considered the aux tank.

I definitely want to keep the auto; I like to be able to put my foot down and just cruise, among other advantages. There's gotta be a way to run the Toyota auto with a TDI, Acmeadapters has a kit for it. The kit probably doesn't cover electronics, but it must at least be possible. Maybe dual ECUs?

No matter, I have plenty of time to learn. I'm not starting a project like this until I'm done with college and not DD'ing the Runner anymore.

Zelephant....

Just curiosity,.... any idea what you'd lose in mileage with an Auto?

Make no mistake, you do lose considerable mileage with an auto. IIRC, from the factory, 22RE autos got just 16 city (19 highway). I do have an unconfirmed report that most of the efficiency is lost in the integrated chain-driven t-case. A member on here claimed that after cracking his t-case housing (reducing tension), his mileage shot up (maybe I can dig up the thread). So my plan is to eventually (as always) use Inchworm Gear's auto-to-gear-driven t-case adapter. And so long as I'm dreaming, I'll throw duals in there while I'm at it!

But by the time I do that, the 4Runner's gonna be a weekend vehicle. I'll want the ability to kick back and cruise without shifting. Plus, autos come with lower stock ratios (I think), and are favored by pro rock crawlers. And they're almost identical to the Jeep AW-4 tranny, which is supposed to be very good behind motors making WAY more horse than a 22RE, or even a TDI. Heck, there was a guy on here not too long ago swapping his manual for an auto!

Hey, ..... don't throw things at me now! hahahaha, jk. Yeah, I hear ya.... just always had sticks, love em. I even found a 4 Speed 70CST Blazer with 350 4bolt main.... MAN I miss that rig!

My buddy had an 86 Auto 4Runner 4x4.... It had a header, cam, ...did just fine on the hills/mountain passes. Not quite as good as the 5spd IIRC, ...but just fine nonetheless!

I wouldn't mind having an Auto with a 3.4 or 1UZ, either.

The A/T has its advantages, it's nice when you are in stop and go traffic, and it multiplies torque. Since my rig was originally an auto, it only has the 4:10 gears because it is a V6. I had to plan merging, and passing was not even considered. Granted, i needed the shift and lock-up solenoids($180), it was quite a pregnant dog.
My decision to swap a 5spd in was mainly in preparation for the TDI swap, however, to my knowledge no-one has put an R150f behind the v-dub greaser engine yet. So no adapters are available.
I planned on designing and fabbing my own since the Acme-adapters product is $600+, i could spend that on a turbo and intercooler.
It is going to be tough to get a TDI that is running, hopefully in a drivable car so i can tune it a bit and verify it functions properly. Actually the tough part will be diverting attention from my rig for a few months.

Not sure yet, I'd like too, but at $670 for adapter plates and axle shafts, then add on a hub service kit...hub spindle( a used solid front axle will run you around $200) this disc swap would be approaching $1000. That isn't too bad when you realize you have new wheel bearings(which i am replacing while i do the disc conversion), and a full float rear.

i have both, although my brake-line bender is crappy, but the bubble flare kit, while it is cheap, works very well.

The LSPV can be removed and attached to the flexible line on the bracket attached to the fuel tank mount. The line is long enough to bypass the LSPV. I'll take another pic tonight.
