My First Yota 92 Build

Hey guys, Im 20 years old heres my first toyota pickup. Ive had it for 2 years its a 1992 extended cab v6. Heres its transformation with some big plans

When i brought it home:

4wd didnt work for some reason. I wanted to ditch the limited stock travel and ADD hubs for a solid axle and manual locking hubs. So i picked up a 1982 completely rebuilt solid axle.

Then i welded some armor and reinforcement for the stock housing.

Once i got most of the parts I needed I began the SAS. Chopping off the IFS is probably the biggest pain in the ass part of the swap. Grinding the frame smooth took a good time.

Then i welded up the front hanger and cut the frame tube holes. Mounted the leafs, got the axle under, got my shocks setup, brake lines extended, fj rotors, v6 calipers, steeeing, etc.

Was able to get it standing and tested the flex and everything lined up and was welded right the first time around. I took my sweet time double checking measurements, angles, etc.

And how she stands now:

This is the next thing I'm hoping to begin swapping in... 3.4!

Dang kid. That is a sweet ride. How much did the SAS end up costing you and how much time did it take?

I didn't bother keeping it at a budget. I wanted all new parts and good quality parts while doing the SAS. A good estimate in parts- Rebuilt Axle/extra diff/extra hubs- $350 Armor- $80 Steering-$350 Bilstein Shocks(4)-$360 Old man EMU leafs 3"- $150 Steering Stabilizer- $100 Front hanger Kit- $150 U-bolt flip kit- $60 Extended brake lines- $80 Fj rotors- $40 Wheel spacers- $80 35" tires and rims- $500 About $2,500 Plus another $300 for torch fuel and oxy., grinding wheels, tools, special socket sizes, special axle tools. Etc. Add shipping cause a lot was ordered online and tax and anything i forgot to add, its close to a $3000 project.

Oh and it took about a year to gather all the parts cause i pay for everything. Then about a month to remove the IFS, spent just an hour or so after work and whenever i could. Then about 2 weeks to get the axle all mounted and everything else. 2 months pretty much.

Im hoping to start on it in september. I still need to do more reading about the wiring parts. I currently have a 3.4 with only 40k miles but the ECU is for an auto. Ive heard there is a way to get around the auto ECU to run with a 5spd transmission. But I want to do the motor swap so its clean and looks almost original in the engine bay and things matchup as they should. So I'm hoping to source down a manual ECU meant for either a 1999 or 2000 3.4. But they sure are a pretty penny! ~$300 Ive seen someone run a 4x2 manual and could see that work if you have manual locking hubs like my setup. The brainstorming continues! Haha

I will definitely source a lot of the conversion parts from ORS, such as the crossover pipe, conversion harness, and t100 2wd oil pan.

So update on the 3.4. I bought the motor for $900 with all accessories and was told it only has 40k original miles. I believe it cause the block is pretty clean from grime and oil. The guy i bought it from didn't do anything with the motor it was the guy before him that used it before me. So i wasn't able to get much accurate info about the motor from whom i bought it from, good deal nonetheless so no worries. I found a few things on the motor that raises some flags that this might have been part of a previous 3.0 to 3.4 swap. Here is why:

-Originally this motor was an automatic but it has a clutch on it. The ECU it came with is for an auto 4x4.

My First Yota 92 Build-image-1999442635.jpg

-The oil pan on the 3.4 looks very similar to an IFS pan for the 3.0. I looked at my 3.0 i currently drive and looks exact. See pics below:

3.0 Oil Pan

3.4 Oil Pan

My First Yota 92 Build-image-601608193.jpg

Also the wiring is looks to have been tampered with as its all labeled and some wires are spliced.

My First Yota 92 Build-image-170939698.jpg

My First Yota 92 Build-image-1726496391.jpg

Also the timing cover was intentionally cut, looks like the same way the supercharger guys do to run the belt to the crank. Can anyone confirm?

My First Yota 92 Build-image-2932843017.jpg

So right now im trying to source down a manual to findout more about the wiring and seeing what all the labeling means that was done beforehand.

Quick Update for you guys:

I decided since I have the motor out and sitting in my garage I will be tearing it down to tune it up some. I will be doing all belts including timing belt, water pump, oil pump, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, spark plugs, wires, and a few seals. I found a pretty nice quality kit already with most of the parts I mentioned, http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-TOYOTA-OEM-3-4-LITER-5VZFE-V6-COMPLETE-19-pcs-TIMING-BELT-PUMP-KIT-/371080581692?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item566620523c&vxp=mtr It's all OEM quality, which I prefer buying. I will also try painting some parts to freshen up the look such as, the block, heads(if i don't need to remove), valve covers, intake plenum, and any plastic covers.

I also found a great source for free information on all years of the 5VZFE 4Runner. http://tacoma.site40.net/4Runner_96-...g/contents.htmHas the repair service manual information as well as the wiring/electrical information. Hope this helps anyone else looking for 5VZFE info! Going to be spending this week reading up on the wiring mostly and figuring out if my harness has already been used in a previous 3.0>3.4 swap. (Would sure make my life easier) If you have read before I showed some things that raised my eyebrow on whether this engine was part of another swap.

I found out the turn around time for the ORS harness is 3 weeks!!(If i need a conversion harness) I need a ride to work every week, so if I cannot find a means of transportation while I am pulling the 3.0 out, I might have to slow down the project a little and pickup a cheap 2nd ride while I perform the motor swap.

After I get the motor tuned up, I plan to start purchasing conversion parts such as the 2wd oil pan and crossover pipe. Still debating about buying some headers. If i buy Doug Thorley Ceramic headers, would I be able to run an ORS crossover? Pretty specific setup so might have to find the answer on my own, but if anyone can chime in if they have done it, it would be helpful.

Hope to see you guys soon with some more updates and pics!
