Thinking of doing a makeover...

Badlands front bumper or stick with the TJM? thoughts?

badlands - pros/cons

PROS:
uses stock blinker lens ( I can put my clear corners, blinkers and tail lights back on ) better approach angle, less weight, easier winch mounting.

CONS: its tubular, but i can live with it

TJM - pros/cons

PROS:
plated, beefy, attractive.

Cons: crappy blinker set up, bad approach angle, heavy, winch mount in a pain in the butt to get to, and its a downer when needing to take it off.

Keep the TJM, you dont see bumpers like yours much. You dont really rock crawl anyways so approach angle doesnt really matter

Yotatech has alerted me that you are considering spending more money on mods.....
Side note though your rig is pretty solid I would use that on the suspension or maybe some storage in the back for gear?? Maybe dual battery, ARB Fridge...I could go on and on and on haha!
Keep the TJM!

If it weren't for the rarity of the TJM I'd say junk it... I hate the look of the tubes on it...
But for what you do, it's your best option at the moment...

And, like matt said, you don't need approach angle... You don't crawl enough... You want more approach angle, spend money on some BJ spacers and actuall springs for the rear...

I love the TJM dont get me wrong. I've even ran the idea of hanging it in the garage and just buying a badlands lmao. but who knows... I dont know what I wanna do with the rig. Part of me is telling me to stay the course and get the rest of the expedition mods out of the way... which includes:

cargo area drawer system - Clean set up. No higher than my wheel well humps, but something functional with subwoofer carpet and sliders. that also has a fold out sleeping platform that folds toward the front of the truck.

roof rack - I already have this researched. I just need to take measurements, contact the company, and order it. but its a custom welded construction and its gonna cost a pretty penny. But It also comes with every attachment I plan on putting on it ( another hi lift jack, light bar with 4 hella 700ffs HID )

dual batteries and revamped electrical system - dual optima red tops, fuse block, 140 amp alternator and upgraded grounds. no idea where i'd mount the 2nd battery though.

but with that said, I would need to beef the rear suspension. Do i stay with the coil/links or go leafs? (63's or TG rear leaf conversion? )

Its all up in the air right now. I feel as if my suspension NEEDS attention though. but part of me wants to wait and see what I can come up with suspension wise.

I ALWAYS told myself that I would build my 4Runner for pure expedition and have a nice, low lift straight axle rig. Something that is road worthy. ( sway bars ) while still being able to handle its own on 35" tires with selectable lockers and 5.29s.

haha thats what everyone tells me...

Honestly, I'm building my dream rig... I already have the bumpers i've wanted since 2006... Thanks to you, I have the rear. I was seriously a 5 year old on christmas day opening and installing that thing.

But now its time to start getting extensive into it. I'm remodeling my house currently, so once thats done, i'll have an empty garage. so I definitely have the time to think.

I HAVE the 2nd gen 4runner, obviously. I LOVE the body style and its tailgate. When i bought it in 2006. I didn't know squat about the 3.4 swap and such. so thats just more icing on the cake... but the price of having a 2nd gen 4runner comes with having a 3vz or 22re but i dont mind the 3.0, i'd rather swap a 3.4 and have the power... but heres what I want in a nutshell, someday...

Nutshell list:
3.4 swap: possibly stock, but I atleast want headers and a snorkel for it. I wouldn't mind a supercharger, but stock works for me.
SAS: LOW LOW LOW LOW LOW. <---- this is key. if its not low, I dont want it. I want to run 35s and have the 35s look BIG. whether it be leaf/link, I dont care. if its LOW, i wont mind.
Axles: I think two rock assault axles would be sweet. they may be overkill for what I would do with them, but hey... I said reliable and structurely sound, right? i would definitely settle with a front 84/85 though.
Gears/lockers: 5.29s for the 35s and E-lockers for both axles would be a dream!
Roof rack: I already have this picked out, I just need funds to order it. It'll be the perfect rack, holding a 2nd hi lift, and a light rack with 4 hella 700ffs with 2 lights for the back of the rack.
Cargo drawer system: everyone knows what this is about. but I want a nicely done set up! I have this idea drawn in my head and I definitely have the tools and skills to do it ( 2 1/2 years of woodshop class, access to wood working tools and autocad ) I just need the time, dimensions, money and supplies.
Tires: 35" tires. possibly km2s, possibly mtrs. i haven't decided.
ARB Fridge: I've thought about taking a side of my rear seat out and building a platform to hold an ARB fridge on the passenger side. But i think i might mate it to the drawer system in the back to save seats and room. i haven't decided.
Electrical system: dual batteries ( no idea where i'd put the 2nd currently, but with a 3.4, it'd be an easy feat. ) 140 amp alternator, fuse block and tougher grounds.
Body: I'd played with this idea a little bit. but lining the entire truck while being paint matched would be pretty sexy in my opinion. Some of you are like DONT DO IT but honestly? if you toss sand into the mixture instead of the rubbber grommets that come with the AL's liner... It comes out very very smooth, and not too rough. you can barely tell its lined, and its very strong.

WAY DOWN THE ROAD: A matching offroad trailer... but thats so far down the road that its almost non existant... lol

So does everyone here feel my vibe? I know im on the right track, but this is all rolling through my head with this rig. I may just stay the course and get the roof rack, and cargo box, then convert it to leafs using TGs 4" kit, pull the subwoofers out and use them in a different vehicle, revamp the electrical system... etc etc... and keep with it.

Do you ever check out expeditionportal? Some of the rigs and ideas over there are great to get the wheels in your head to start spinning.

I think you need to stay with coils, get one of the stiffer ones from OME. As for the fridge, a few companies make those slides that are pretty cool, you could probably make your own. One of these days when your bored wire yourself in a 12v plug to the back so its all ready to go.

I think I told you already, but theres a straight axled 2nd gen in town, he lives on main street. I'll try to get a pic of it, because it's really low. I'll stop by and ask him about his setup

I dont have coils on my rig :/ its torsion bar set up. if it had coils, i would stay with it. 12v plugs will come with the build. I want a few recessed into the cargo box.

And if you can, go for it. I was thinking of using 3" and 4" trail gear leafs, pulling a few leafs and then using a 5" shackle.... keeping it low, but high enough for hi steer... if that makes sense.

Well mike, maybe you should start working on planing the other mods your wanting to do. Then tackle your decision about your suspension in the future.

Interesting list of ideas dude I suppose if I were in your shoes I would start with the one thing I'd like to dig into the most and go from there. Assuming this keeps you on track with your eventual goal. The list is pretty endless when modifying these rigs so I would always keep the functionality of the next mod in mind. Judging by your list of weight adding I might consider the 3.4 swap first, which would force you to save and allow you time to plan your setup.

You will have to hit me up and invite me to go camping mate. Unless I'm too old to hang out with, LOL.
