today i headed to council bluffs to work on pulling my 88s motor at gizlers shop. about 1pm or so i mentioned to gizler about a low tire i had and wanted to swap the rear tires off the 88 onto the 89.
crank it over, nothing. spray some start fluid in and it starts, but does not stay running. this happened to me awhile ago and it turned out to be the 7.5a ignition fuse. i checked it and it was ok. i felt the fuel relay and it clicked when i cranked it, so it was working. we tried jumping the FP and a 12v source and got nothing. that got me thinking so i pulled the seat to check the wiring. i was going to try and jump a wire from a 12v source directly to the pump but noticed the wiring had a pretty good strain on it. i worked it loose and got the plug up in viewing range. i noticed a small spot of green on the harness and there it was....the power wire was completely disintegrated. i dont know for sure, but it looks to me like when i welded up my chevy 63 springs some slag or molten metal landed on it and exposed it to the elements. a quick fix was a butt connector and it runs fine.
this is slowly turning into the 'anything is possible' mobile.
Luckily it was the wire that got damaged. Getting the pressure line to separate from the fuel pump assembly can be a bear and the assembly is getting harder to find and usually not cheap. In the past, I have dropped the tank just because I could not get the assembly to separate from the fuel line and having the assembly attached to the line. A royal pain in the rear having to do it that way.
i was quite surprised at the amount of rust on the new one compared to this one. no guarantees on how this would of separated, but it looked really clean. it almost got to the point of taking the new runners pump out to replace this one and im glad i didnt. this area is supposed to get a blizzard so maybe tomorrow ill drive over some stuff im not supposed too.
