It was still full of fluid when I got it, I drained it out and didn't find anything that wouldn't be normal, I have spun both axles and the pinion feeling for rough spots and didn't feel any, I checked the brake shoes and they look to have plenty of life so with no leaks or apparent problems, I have decided to just go ahead and run it.
I saw the truck that it came out of, it was a 72 Chevy, obviously not the original rear end but he had swapped in a newer axle with disc brakes and a hydro brake setup so it wasn't due to any issues.
Screaming tool? I assume you mean deal? The 14 bolt for some reason is a cheap axle that nobody really wants, the guy said he had it up on CL for awhile with no responses. The major cons that I see of this axle is the size and weight, ground clearance and not a whole lot of market for gears and lockers.

I got the old spring perches off and put the axle in and got it all lined up, tacked in the new perches and fully installed the axle and checked my pinion angle and double checked my measurements.

All looked good so I pulled it back out and burned in the perches, my wire speed was a bit too fast I think but still looks much prettier then what came off.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get it painted and maybe installed.

Thanks Chef, I was looking at some steel 8 lug wheels in the 16.5 flavor and thought they would look pretty sweet, I may be going that route for wheels when I get there.

Today I sold my Subaru that I bought when I got in the accident, I sold it for $3200 when I bought it with blown HG's for $1200 and put $300 into it, it was always the plan and with winter coming around, Subie's are pulling a premium right now.
Sooooo what does all this mean for the truck? Well, I can now go straight to buying a Dana 60 instead of rocking the 44 for awhile, I should be able to get everything to get the axle hung and steer, I will still have to save a bit later for my brake system. But looking at the 14 bolt E-brake and my stock cable, I was racking my brain trying to come up with a solution and finally gave up and put in an order to All-Pro today.

Lookin good. Im doing the same thing kinda. You gonna strip those drums off for discs? I bought my brake adapters from ruffstuffspecialties.com awesome place. Good prices and got my stuff fast. I put on dually hubs to narrow the axle to 63" just a little wider than Toyota and having a guy shave the ring gear for me so I can shave it.

Eventually I will probably swap to discs but I figure these are some pretty huge brakes and if they can stop a one ton truck hauling a load, they will work okay for my little truck for a while. So you are doing the Ballistic kit for the shave job?

Ya the brakes will stop you for sure. I did disc to fit wheels. I'm building mine with a set of wheels with 5.5" backspace to run on the street and another set for playing with 2.5 inch backspace. I'm gonna make my own shave kit and a friend is turning a ring gear for me. Don't have the $400 to buy a kit and preturned gear.

Ah, OK, I am not planning on running on the road so I figure the extra width will give some more stability and not to mention it just looks sexy IMO.

Ya I drive mine a lot and would like to keep it somewhat street ready so the deep b.s. wheels will put me about 2" wider then what I am with toy axles. Then with my play wheels it'll be +3" on each side more. I'm at 114" wheel base so should be pretty stable. I'm going with a 17x10 wheel.

Yeah, I noticed there is not a lot of them out there, I would want some 17's if I could find them but would settle on 16's. The 16.5 wheels I saw were just some on craigslist that I thought would look pretty cool. If I can, I want to run just some plain jane steel wheels that I might do a DIY beadlock kit later on to them.

Thanks Chef

Today, I didn't get really anything done, I have been spending all day looking for parts and a cheap replacement car. I did go pick up this front Dana 60

He said he broke one of the hubs and put those nasty yellow Ford hubs on, this one needs some work and I paid too much for it, there is not a lot of Dana 60's on CL right now and the others that I found had no # listed and never replied to the email's I sent 2 days ago , but now I am fully committed to running tons.

Yeah, I hear ya.... I've dropped my (Hold out for a FAIR PRICE)-principals on things that I needed MANY times, hehehe.. You'll make it all worth it and make up that loss with your own work in a couple hours, I'd bet

Can't wait to see this, man!

I am getting anxious to get it all together, I can't wait to see it either. I think about it everyday sitting on wheels and able to move out of the garage, the wife mentions it also.

hAHAHAHA, ... 'The wife mentions it also', just tossed in there! lol. That cracked me up, man.

Hmmmmm, .... You know, I have those 98 Dakota 56" Leaf Packs... BUT, kinda got talked out of doing it for now. I have someone who will help me do em.. But it's a bit of work to get them just right(even though they're pretty much the same ratio from A/B measurements, ya know?)... Have to go back 5" and forward 3.5..... But then a 200$ Set of OME's would bolt right up and 'put-put' down the road nice and comfy/lil less flexy... What do ya think?

All in all she's a good woman, she understands what I am doing and she likes going wheeling, she grew up with all brothers and I wheel with 2 of them so she knows what its all about. The grinding disc just got the floor in the garage all dirty and all the stuff is cluttering the garage again after I spent 2 weekends cleaning it all so it makes it hard for her to get in there to use the washer and dryer.

There is a lot of stuff that will just bolt on and make everything easier but to be honest, I enjoy doing some fab work, makes you feel better that your truck is a little more different then all the others on the road, also gives you the chance to be creative and use your brain. I don't know maybe its just me that thinks that way, but I always love a challenge, I love work that make me stop and think about what I am doing.
