I figured it would be nice for rocky trails when my foot is bouncing off the pedal, and I had one time that it was a dangerous situation and couldn't let off the brake, I had to shut off the engine and crawl with the clutch cancel switch to safety.
Plus I had the most essential part of the project that was going to go in the trash, for a mod that I spent $12 on and may someday wish I had it, mind as well do it.

This is after getting the lettering done, I put down a silver base and put some red accents in with some white to brighten up some spots, then hit it with some aztec gold candy and then some fire orange candy.

and pretty much done without the shadowing around letters and clear, I am not a professional painter and airbrushed as a hobby years ago, this is my first attempt on a sheet metal and first attempt in about 2 years at airbrushing.



I am in the process of painting the evil monkey from Family Guy below it, I am also thinking of adding some stars using the silver base and aztec gold candy.



Might have to rename it from the Bucket build to the Ape Doody build

I was surfing Pirate the other week and checking out some of the rigs on there and noticed everyone has fullsize axles. I have always loved the look but figured that sticking some tons under a Toyota would be pretty spendy, until I took a look at craigslist and found that Corp 14 bolts are pretty cheap, and thinking about it, building my front Toyota axle would cost as much as the initial cost of a front Dana 60.

So I came up with a plan to sell the Toyota SFA I have and buy a Corp 14 bolt, stick that in the rear and sell the rear to put toward either just getting a Dana 44 to get it going and get a 60 later or just save and get a 60 from the start. So I picked up this pig for $50 last night.





Look at the size of those drums, this is, according to the PBB 14B bible, a 500# axle, and it feels like it, I had to drag it up the driveway into the garage with the truck and a tow strap.
I already figure some will tell me about how the Toyota axle holds up, but if you think about it after putting in Longs and the gussets and everything you are at the price of a D60 and you still have issues with trunnion bearings and the housing getting bent. I doubt I will ever have to worry about my axles with 14b/D60 combo and I can run whatever size tire I want pretty much.

 

Wow. I'm really curious to see how this turns out. Take a lot of pix man. BTW do u have a reference pGe to see what one of these toyota trucks looks like with those huge axles? I'd like to check'em out.

I am most likely going to swap out the toy axle next weekend and put it up for sale to fund the front axle.

I have a friend of mine who swapped on Chevy axles Dana 60's, not sure, but they were definitely either Dana 44's or 60's. He swapped them into his 1989 toy 4Runner. I gotta admit it looks super sweet. I'll find you the page I linked his pix on. I know I put some pix on my thread.

Gonna have very nice balance once you swap man.

Thanks guys, the axle came off a single rear wheel truck although they made them for duallys also.

Some of the specs on the axle: The ring gear diameter is 10.5 inches, it is 67 inches wide from mounting surface to mounting surface, it has 4.10 gears in it, it weighs about 550#'s with drums and 450 without, it has 30 spline axles and the smallest part of the axle where it necks down is 1.36" and at the flange is a huge 1.45 inches, it is a full floating axle which means that the weight of the truck rides on the axle tube instead of the actual axle shaft which makes it extremely strong.

I just ordered my swap kit from Sky's offroad so it should be here in a few days and then the plan is this weekend to at least have the Toyota axle out and up on CL.

One thing that is a downside to the 14 Bolt axle is the "Rock anchor" lip at the bottom that gives less clearance, one way to get a bit more clearance is to grind the lip down smooth with the cover, another is a shave kit that involves cutting out the housing and shaving down the ring, I went with the first option.

Gained probably 1/2 to 3/4 inches of clearance, lots of grinding though

Jeez! That thing is massive! Dude you are moving through this project fairly quick. Can't wait to see more updates. I still got a ways to go on my SAS. But at least now I know I can afford the parts so I should be ordering more parts within a months time.

I'm not moving that fast, I have had this truck for over 2 years and really have not done much to it when I think about it. After I get the spring perches cut off and new ones welded on its stuck in limbo until the axle sells, which reminds me to bump my for sale thread.

 

this thing is going to be beastly! cant wait to see it completely hung and then sitting on tires! oh by the way i have a lead on some 38x14.50x16 toyo mt's with like 20% tread 50 bucks a piece from a guy that use to work with me.

 

Thanks, I am getting some 36's for now from Mike that he has just sitting around on 8 lug wheels, but to roll around in the garage I will be using the wheels and tires from my dad's Dodge. Depending on how things go I may take you up those tires though as 36's will be pretty small considering the ground clearance with the rear end.
