Intermitant starting problem

Intermitant starting problem
1987 Toyota pickup, 2wd, Automatic, FIE22 RE, new alt, new batt. new starter. Sometimes starts right up, sometimes flywheel grind, sometimes click. the click situation is the one im concerned with; Tried jumping it, drew huge amount of juice and would barely crank. When it did get started, as soon as I hit the lights it died. Lights did not dim. Sometimes it starts right up, no problem. ATM its dead in a parking lot at work. This time boosting it did no good, just clicks. Lights and everything seem fine. Gonna check ground straps, but what else should I look for, is this a known issue? I have read lots of almost the same problem, but not quite. The wireing look intact and not burned, the truck is in great shape. Really bummed ATM.

Probably a bad starter, maybe a bad wire, and certainly an engineering flaw.
Test voltage (loaded circuit) in the fuse box, and at the solenoid wire on the starter.
:Google: rad4runner starter relay fix.
You might need to clean up the contacts in the ignition switch.

Click-only but now crank?
"1987 Toyota pickup, 2wd, Automatic, FIE22 RE, new alt, new batt. new starter."
Excellent job describing the truck! Please add that to your signature; Would help a lot later.
Yes, connections; pls see my signature.
A problem well-stated is almost solved.
Please put us in front of that engine/starter.
What do you see, hear, feel, measure?
EXACTLY WHAT AND WHERE IS THE PART THAT CLICKS?
Does it click faintly or energetically?
You sure it's flywheel grind or just solenoid fluttering?

Absolutely. Whether above works or not, your model does not have a starter relay and so much power is lost before it gets to the starter solenoid. That needs to get fixed:

Lights OK but engine dies when lights are turned on?

You're absolutely, positively sure that If lights do not have issues? Then, you could have bad connections/wirings/fuse that are partially bad (yes, break in fuse element but still touching intermittently.
Did this happen before or after you replaced all those parts you listed above? Why did you replace those parts?

Bad Ground
So, after cooling off and being logical about it, yep, the ground that goes from battery to block was literally hanging by a thread. I replaced all the parts i listed because they were original parts (alt and starter)! I figured it was time. The battery was swollen, definibly time to change it. Truck was maintained with extra loving care by the original owner. I will go and clean every contact just to be sure, though. I was amazed the origianl factory parts were on it, I talked to the ladies mechanic, he did rebuild them,(alt and starter) so that explains how that worked so long. He also sent me to you guys! TYVM! The lights I suspect were grounded with the other ground wire to firewall, so I suppose thats why they still worked. I did have the parking light problem last year, was the relay on that one."1987 Toyota pickup, 2wd, Automatic, FIE22 RE

Aside from that. Toyota messed up the cranking circuit wiring on our 22RE's. Explanation and $30 fix are here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52297396
