gary_the_4runner's 1994 4runner "stock" build

went ahead and bought an sr5 2nd gen today, after searching for weeks on CL. found a guy in the west hills in portland who really just wanted it out of his driveway. it has been sitting there for the past 3 years, tags expired but he had taken it through DEQ and it passed last week. it has the 3.0 and 5 speed with 157k original miles (i carfax'd it to be sure) with head gaskets replaced @ time of recall. the PO was the second owner but had purchased the vehicle in 1995 after a woman had leased it for a short time.

motor had a recent tune up, sounds good, but has a bit of a toyota tick to it, sounds like the usual fuel injector issues, otherwise quiet. shifts smooth, clutch is original but works perfectly fine, brakes are a little grabby but stops well. motor has plenty of pep still in it, surprisingly!

the interior is pretty flawless aside from missing the shifter boot, a worn shifter knob and the passenger front door lock looks like a dog chewed on it. but seats have no tears, carpet has no stains, dash has no cracks! all electrical works, even the A/C blows cold.

the exterior is worn as well but in decent condition, its missing the rear running board molding on both sides, the power antennae mast has broken off, plenty of scratches in the paint and a couple of little dents. it has a cracked windshield which will be the first thing to replace ($165.00 installed @ m.s. glass), michelins need replacing, they have plenty of tread but the side walls show signs of cracking from age.

i bought this for my fiance to drive, she currently drives an '02 ford explorer 4.0 with an AT, but we are deciding to sell it since we are not crazy about it and get something a little more FUN.

i bought it for $3,000
Kbb value: (3330(fair)-4305(excellent))+420(carfax add)=$3750-4725 suggested retail value
so all in all i feel like i got a pretty good deal

more pictures to come, my camera battery died while i took this one.

took the hitch off, 2"reciver, 2" ball, heavy duty lock, square tube from frame rail to frame rail and 1/2" plate bolting to the frame itself. 8 bolts total. must have weighed 100lbs., gave those tired springs a break!!!

plenty of room back there for the pups

free of stains or tears, i dont think anyone sat back here...

gave the shifter bezel to my mother to sew a new black vinyl shifter boot on there, also replaced original knobs that were chewed on by PO's dog with my 85's original knobs. i use the big TG knobs in my 85 now for my gorilla mitts!

NO TEARS!!!! original seats! never heard of such a thing haha

right after a bath, also SEAFOAMED the brake booster vac line, SMOKE GALORE!!!!

had to give my 85 a lil limelight... bout threw those a/t's away after i got stuck on the steep part #4 powerline (brown's camp), had to reverse back out of the slick clay, SCARY

just fixed the rear window problem,

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f131.../#post51543903

my mom finished the boot, but used my old 85 boot for a pattern. the tranny shifter sits at a different angle and is a little longer than the 85 so the boot only comes up about half way, but still looks great for a home brew. PICS TO COME.

also, thought the dome light bulb was burnt out, but all it needed was a little tap on the side and for me to switch it back and forth a few times and now it consistently works.

other things i will attend to today:
replace bulb for 3rd brake light
figure out how to get the parking lights out of the corners, they dont work!

well might as well catch up on this thread a little bit, since the 85 is gone!

here is the moog cc255 swap...

BEFORE

old springs on the left, moogs on the right.

OEM shocks from the dealership

REAR

FRONT

AFTER

ended up with about an inch of lift, and definitely can feel the difference in the ride.
all 4 OEM shocks (dealerdirectparts.com) and moog cc255 springs (summitracing.com) were purchased and shipped for a little more than 200 bucks. used the rental spring compressors from autozone for 55 bucks which i got back when i returned them.

I have been on the look out for your other 4runner.

1" gain from a spring that looks shorter is pretty cool
just need to get rid of the running boards

i would love to turn this into a weekend warrior too, but my 5'4" wife uses those running boards all of the time and its her daily driver.

i bought some aisin hubs for it and was a wabbit for a day and cleaned and greased em up.

installation on hold, cause i need to replace the leaky CV's and im trying to find it in me to start wrenching again

here's a pic of the shifter boot my mom made me
at first i had her use the pattern from my 85 shifter boot. needless to say it didnt work right. it was far too short.
so i went junkyard shopping and found an old brown one out of a 92 runner.
2 days later my mom made this... (shes a pro)
told her we should go into business together.

That is a clean looking runner. It is looking better the more you have it. Great job.

That shifter boot looks like a factory shifter boot. Your mom has a little gold mine and does not know it. First and second gen leather shift boots are hard to find. Tell her to make some and sell some on here.

My mom did the same thing for me too. I can cut, weld, and wrench on a crawler, but I still need to learn how to sew. It's a skill that can always come in handy when you need it..
